Another of several sophomores playing key roles for a new-look Cristo Rey group, Byrd helped get the Blue Pride started with a strong opening half while showing positive signs of overall growth in his game. Byrd scored 9 of his 10 points before the break, knocking down a 3 early on before using a poised handle and mature pace to probe into the lane and finish with touch. He looks to have tacked on an inch or two to his frame and continues to come into his own from a physical and athletic standpoint. We’ll look to see him continue to grow into more of a floor leader but Byrd’s skill level and emerging physical tools should have him firmly on D1 radars moving forward.

Byrd mans much of the on-ball duties for this Cristo Rey group and is effective at keeping pressure on the defense at all times. Whether he was pushing the tempo off misses, processing advantages in the half court for others, or calling his own number with his burst and wiggle, you feel the impact that he has on the game for his team. It ultimately helped Cristo Rey to their bracket championship victory. Byrd put up 17.5 points per game in the two showings and while he struggled to find his rhythm from deep, did an nice job of attacking the rim and visiting the charity stripe where he converted with efficiency. The command in which he controls tempo and his team overall seems to have improved since last season.

The 2024-25 season was a monster year for Byrd as averaged 12 points per night, pushed West Catholic to the 3A state title and was a 3rd Team All-PCL selection. He is one of most accurate 3-point shooters in the state (57 3PM; 38% on 3PAs). Plus, Byrd owns a filthy dribble drive scoring and distributing skill set. This week Byrd announced that he is departing West Catholic, transferring to Cristo Rey, and reclassing into the 2028 graduate year.

One of just four sophomores to be named All-PCL this past season, Byrd really came on down the stretch of the year, capping his season with a buzzer-beating 3 to win the state semifinals before scoring 20 points in the Burrs’ state championship victory. His growth as a lead guard figured to be a key development for a young West Catholic group that’s experienced its collective growing pains over the past couple years. Instead, he’ll jump from the PCL over to the PAISAA ranks, joining three-time defending Penn-Jersey champions Cristo Rey and repeating his sophomore year in the process. Byrd immediately becomes one of the premier guards in the area’s 2028 class, with West turning to returner Eric Scott Eric Scott 5'10" | PG West Catholic Prep | 2027 State PA to take on an even heavier playmaking load in his absence.

Byrd was a fun guard to watch, displaying creativity, craftiness, handles, and scoring capabilities on the court. He was a driving force for his team throughout the two games I watched, doing a great job in creating and penetrating, mixing it up offensively as a scorer, showcasing his ability to get by/around defenders, and being a playmaker for others. Looked comfortable being a shot-maker if it was needed.

21 to 16…In 2024-25 Byrd (12 ppg.; 3rd Team All-PCL) continued to solidify his reputation as one of most accurate 3-point shooters in the state by draining 57 triples on the season while shooting 38% from behind thar arc. However, it was his improved off the dribble scoring and distributing skills that moved Byrd up our rankings. This season Byrd attacked the paint more frequently for lay-ins and floaters. He also proved that he could get paint touches and then execute kick outs or drop a pass to the dunker spot. Byrd also thrived at pushing the rock in transition and then delivering live dribble dimes to teammates. His ability to pass out of double teams was impressive too. Byrd’s more well-rounded skill set pushed West Catholic to the 3A State title. Byrd dropped 20 points (2 3PM) in that 3A championship game victory.

Following a breakout regular season as an All-PCL performer, Byrd played hero with his fading catch-and-shoot from the corner to win the game at the buzzer. It was a fitting way for him to end the game, as he’s made his mark thus far in high school as a prolific shotmaker with deep range and a versatile release across any number of actions off the dribble or catch. He led throughout the game, tying for a team-high 11 points. As he grows and matures into his lengthy frame, he continues to get swifter and shiftier off the dribble with the well-rounded skill level to punish whatever opening the defense presents. He’s a polished decisionmaker with a mature feel for the game, signs that point to potential to develop into a true lead guard over time. Make no mistake about it though, it’s the dynamic shooting that will be Byrd’s primary ticket at the next level, and he picked a perfect time to showcase his go-to skill with the season on the line. He’ll look to keep the momentum going into the summer with a couple D1 offers already in tow.

Byrd holds the reputation of being an automatic three-point shooter and he has popped triples throughout NG’s run to the 4A semifinals. In addition to lacing threes, Byrd has scored by attacking his defender off the bounce and getting to the rim for lay-ins. Still, it has been Byrd’s distribution skills that have really turned heads during the state tourney. Byrd (4 apg. in states) has proven that he can deliver well timed passes in pick-n-roll action as well as designed sets. Byrd also excels at pushing the rock in transition and then delivering a live dribble dime to a teammate. During NG’s 1st Round victory over Antietam, Byrd recorded 14 points and 4 assists.

This sophomore has the reputation of being an automatic three-point shooter and that rep held true during the 2024-25 regular season. For example, in late January, Byrd drained 8 threes on his way to 26 points. On the season he averaged 15 points per night and shot 36% from deep. Still, it was the development in Byrd’s dribble drive skills that really caught our attention this season. Byrd frequently went coast-to-coast for fast break lay-ups. He also relentlessly attacked opposing defenses off the dribble in the half-court. Once Byrd (3rd Team All-PCL selection) was in the lane, he scored via pull-ups, runners, and lay-ins. This 2027 prospect is just scratching the surface of his potential.

The last All-Catholic honoree from the 2027 class, Byrd makes his mark primarily as a long-range shooter, where he put together some really prolific performances across the year. He shoots a textbook ball from deep with pristine footwork getting into a number of catch-and-shoot and pullup maneuvers. Where he also showed nice progress this year was as a ballhandler and decisionmaker at the lead guard position. Byrd looks to have established himself as a D1 prospect, with his ultimate level to be determined in large part by where his body settles in as he looks to be in the early stages of physical development.
