Let’s go with a breakdown of superlative skill sets from the games I was able to catch. It is by no means meant to be comprehensive. I couldn’t possibly catch everything.
Following are the performances that caught my eye from the class 2025
Best Scorer: Armoni Portis Armoni Portis SG Warren De La Salle | 2025 State MI 6-2 Warren De La Salle Portis’ DTO squad played with five players on the weekend. Additionally his squad got off to a sluggish start in a Saturday night contest with a good West Michigan Hoops squad. Portis stepped up and put his squad on his back. Scoring from all over the court. Using an explosive first step to get to his spots easily on the perimeter. Elevated over defenders in the mid range. His shot looked smooth with little wasted motion. Frankly his entire game appeared pretty effortless— in a good way. Played at his own pace and under control. Finished with 20 points. Appears ready to move into a larger role with the Pilots in the upcoming season. Should form a nice backcourt duo with Phoenix Glassnor Phoenix Glassnor 6'0" | PG Warren De La Salle | 2025 State MI
Best Post: Parker LePla Parker LePla 6'8" | PF Goodrich | 2025 State MI 6-8 Goodrich The Flint area post is played with Indy Heat Red this weekend. Not the type of young post prospect who needs much projection. He is pretty close to a finished product physically. And that is not a bad thing. Has a sturdy thick frame with big broad shoulders. But also runs the court well and shows athletic burst. Showed a nice soft touch around the basket. Along with the ability to finish over both shoulders. Had a big time sophomore campaign. Leading the Martians (great mascot) to a quarterfinal appearance. Dropping a close one to eventual state champion Ferndale. Looks like he is ready to take the next step in his junior campaign.
Best Post Potential: Joey Agnok 6-8 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern Where LaPlaa looks like a finished product. Agnok just oozes long term potential. Has a long, long and— let me check my thesaurus for this one— really long frame. However not in gangly and uncoordinated manner. Fluid athlete who ran the court easily. As you would expect was a big time presence at the rim defensively. Did appear a little raw offensively. But had have a nice above the rim flush off a lob. Should improve rapidly with more reps. A lot of physical upside to work with though.
Best Ball Handler/Passer: Darryl Thompkins Darryl Thompkins 5'9" | PG East Kentwood | 2025 State MI 5-9 East Kentwood (pictured) Two weekends ago put on absolute show with BNB basketball at the Rumble in the Rapids. I was curious to see what he looked like running with DTO this weekend. Rinse and repeat. Continued to show the ability to be a one man press break. Knifing through defenses with ease. Two weekends ago finished off a lot of those flourishes with points. This weekend found the open man as defenders collapsed on him. Nearly finished with a double double (9 points, 9 assists) in a Saturday afternoon victory. Is going to form a nasty 2025 backcourt with Jah Hatchett Jah Hatchett 5'9" | PG East Kentwood | 2025 State MI in the upcoming season.
Best Point Potential Lincoln Lockhart Lincoln Lockhart 6'1" | CG Traverse City West | 2025 State MI 6-0 Traverse City West Lockhart’s West Michigan Lakers squad was at a decided size disadvantage against Indy Heat Red (see above) on Saturday afternoon. They countered that with steady backcourt play helmed by this Northern Michigan point guard. Lockhart is an excellent penetrator and distributor. However the outside shot started to fall in the second half. Completely changing the tenor of the game. Further opening up driving lanes that he was able to exploit. Good kick out passer off of these drives. Helped set up South Christian forward Caleb Pleune for 16 points. Lockhart had 18 of his own on the way to an excellent weekend.
