IOWA CITY, Iowa – Postseason action in Class 3A tipped off Monday night around the state. The results foreshadowed what could be a wild ride to Des Moines during the next week.

Here’s a look at what went down:

SUBSTATE 1

-Webster City (17-3) survived a scare from Gilbert (5-17), moving on with a 63-60 victory at home. Senior Jaime Grossoehme Jaime Grossoehme 6'1" | SG Webster City | 2023 State IA has led the way for the Lynx at 17.0 points per game, while junior Briar Klaver is contributing 13.6 and 8.3 rebounds.

-In Thursday’s second round, Webster City will play hist ADM (11-11), 42-37 victors against Denison-Schleswig on Monday. Junior Adam Bryte Adam Bryte Adam Bryte 6'2" | SG Adel-DeSoto-Minburn | 2024 State IA has paced the Tigers with 14.6 points per game in 2022-23. They’ve also received 10.5 points and 9.7 rebounds from senior Vince Benetti Vince Benetti 6'4" | PF ADM | 2023 State IA .

-No. 10 Sioux City Heelan (16-6) advanced with a hard-fought, 49-47, overtime win against visiting LeMars Monday. Junior Matt Noll powered the Crusaders with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while senior Carter Kuehl Carter Kuehl Carter Kuehl 5'11" | PG Bishop Heelan | 2023 State IA contributed 10 points and seven boards.

-Heelan will see Carroll on Thursday. The Tigers (12-9) won at Sergeant Bluff- Luton Monday, 60-45, with seniors Trey Hunter and Tanner Gotto Tanner Gotto 6'4" | SF Carroll | 2023 State IA scoring 18 point apiece and combining for 16 rebounds. Their classmate, Jack White, added 12 points and six boards.

SUBSTATE 2

-Third-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley (20-2) stormed past Storm Lake, 86-58. Junior Jesse Van Kalsbeek Jesse Van Kalsbeek 6'0" | SG MOC-Floyd Valley | 2024 State IA has led the Dutchmen with 19.6 points and 7.1 rebounds this season. Seniors Ayden Klein Ayden Klein Ayden Klein 5'11" | SG MOC-Floyd Valley | 2023 State IA and Luke Korver Luke Korver 6'1" | SG MOC-Floyd Valley | 2023 State IA have been adding 16.5 and 16.3 points a game, respectively.

-Sioux Center (14-7) advanced to meet MOC-Floyd Valley Thursday with a 49-43 victory against Spirit Lake. The Warriors have been receiving 18.3 points and 6.2 rebounds a game from senior Kylar Fritz Kylar Fritz 6'0" | SG Sioux Center | 2023 State IA .

-Humboldt (17-4) moved on with a 89-66 win against visiting Perry Monday. Senior Will Orness Will Orness Will Orness 6'1" | SG Humboldt | 2023 State IA tallied 25 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for the winners, while classmate Joshua Thurm Joshua Thurm Joshua Thurm 6'1" | SG Humboldt | 2023 State IA added 22 points and nine boards. Junior Evan Hatcher helped the cause with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

-Humboldt will play host to Algona (15-7) Thursday after the Bulldogs survived a second-half comeback attempt by Spencer in a 51-49 win. Sophomore Ben Helmers Ben Helmers Ben Helmers 6'4" | PG Algona | 2025 State IA ‘s 18.3 points an outing have paced Algona, which has gotten 12.0 points and 9.6 rebounds from fellow sophomore Alex Manske Alex Manske 6'3" | SG Algona | 2025 State IA .

SUBSTATE 3

-No. 2 Clear Lake (21-1) overwhelmed Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 67-35. Titan Schmitt Titan Schmitt 6'0" | SG Clear Lake | 2025 State IA (13), Thomas Meyer Thomas Meyer 6'4" | SF Clear Lake | 2025 State IA (12), Travaughn Luyobya Travaughn Luyobya 5'10" | PG Clear Lake | 2023 State IA (11) and Dylan Litzel (10) all scored in double figures for the Lions.

-Thursday, Clear Lake will play host to Ballard (10-12), 67-41 victors at Nevada. Senior Mason Gorsh Mason Gorsh Mason Gorsh 6'2" | SG Ballard | 2023 State IA ‘s 24 points paved the way for Bombers.

-Seventh-ranked North Polk (17-5) knocked off Saydel, 74-33, aided by an 18-7, first-quarter advantage. Junior Reggie Postel Reggie Postel Reggie Postel 6'1" | SG North Polk | 2024 State IA has averaged 12.3 points with senior Jackson Nemmers Jackson Nemmers 6'2" | SG North Polk | 2023 State IA adding 10.6 this season for the Comets.

-North Polk will play host to Boone on Thursday. The Toreadors (6-14) won, 53-49, at Winterset Monday, their first postseason triumph since ’18. Senior Nathaniel Winter Nathaniel Winter Nathaniel Winter 6'4" | PG Boone | 2023 State IA has led them with 19.8 points a game in ’22-23.

SUBSTATE 4

-No. 5 Marion (17-5) handled Vinton-Shellsburg, 74-28, Monday. Senior Brayson Laube Brayson Laube Brayson Laube 6'2" | PG Marion | 2023 State IA led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals, while classmate Alex Mota Alex Mota 6'1" | SG Marion | 2023 State IA added eight points, 10 boards and four assists. Junior Payton Hodges Payton Hodges 6'1" | SG Marion | 2024 State IA chipped in with 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

-Marion faces Decorah (14-7) Thursday after the Vikings topped West Delaware, 61-60. Junior Ben Bockman Ben Bockman Ben Bockman 6'4" | SF Decorah | 2024 State IA scored 24 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists, while Matthew Bockman Matthew Bockman 6'1" | SG Decorah | 2024 State IA added 19 points and a pair of assists.

-Charles City (16-5) proved to be too much for Independence, winning 71-33 on Monday. Comet junior Kam Mestas led all scorers with 23 points, while Keenan Wiley (14) and Brennan Schmidt (12) also reached double-figure scoring for the winners.

-The Comets will meet Mount Vernon Thursday. The Mustangs (14-7) dispatched of Crestwood, 63-32, on Monday. Senior Brady Erickson scored 19 for the winners, while juniors Joe Rhomberg Joe Rhomberg 6'1" | SF Mount Vernon | 2024 State IA and Jackson Kutcher Jackson Kutcher 6'0" | SG Mount Vernon | 2024 State IA each netted 15.

SUBSTATE 5

-Fourth-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier (16-6) cruised by Clear Creek Amana, 70-52, on Monday. The Saints received 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks from senior Josef Lemker Josef Lemker Josef Lemker 6'2" | SG Xavier | 2023 State IA with Aidan Yamilkoski Aidan Yamilkoski Aidan Yamilkoski 6'4" | SG Xavier | 2023 State IA also scoring 20. Junior Joseph Bean Joseph Bean Joseph Bean 6'3" | PG Kennedy | 2024 State IA filled the stat sheet for the winners with 15 points, 13 boards, five blocks and four steals.

-Xavier takes on Western Dubuque (10-12) on Thursday after the Bobcats downed Center Point-Urbana, 77-53, on the road. Senior Daviyon Gaston Daviyon Gaston 6'1" | SG Western Dubuque | 2023 State IA ‘s 16.0 points a contest have led them this winter.

-Davenport Assumption (13-9) advanced with a 72-55 victory against Central DeWitt on Monday. The Knights were led by Damyen Jackson Damyen Jackson 6'0" | PG Assumption | 2025 State IA ‘s 22 points. Fellow sophomore Braylon Thomsen Braylon Thomsen 6'4" | SF Assumption | 2025 State IA also played well.

-Assumption matches up with Dubuque Wahlert Thursday. The Golden Eagles (11-10) received 22 points from senior Seamus Crahan Seamus Crahan 6'6" | SF Wahlert Catholic | 2023 State IA , while classmates Duke Faley Duke Faley 6'5" | C Wahlert Catholic | 2023 State IA (19 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals) and Jack Walsh (13 points, nine boards, seven blocks) stuffed the scorebook.

SUBSTATE 6

-No. 6 Newton (15-6) eliminated Oskaloosa, 70-56, on Monday. The Cardinals got 20 points apiece from seniors Brody Bauer Brody Bauer Brody Bauer 6'2" | SG Newton | 2023 State IA and Cole Plowman Cole Plowman 6'4" | PF Newton | 2023 State IA . Classmate Jake Ingle Jake Ingle 5'7" | PG Newton | 2023 State IA contributed 11 points and seven assists to the winning cause.

-Fairfield (12-9) is next up for Newton after the Trojans outlasted Washington, 57-51. They were led by senior Max Weaton Max Weaton Max Weaton 6'6" | PF Fairfield | 2023 State IA ‘s 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Tate Allen Tate Allen 5'11" | SG Fairfield | 2023 State IA , also a senior, added seven assists and eight points.

-Mount Pleasant (18-5) slipped by Fort Madison, 40-38, on Monday. Senior Owen Vansickel paced the Panthers with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Fellow 12th-grader Aaiden Ashton chipped in with seven points, four rebounds, a block and a steal.

-Solon (17-5) is on to the second round after topping Keokuk, 63-54. Junior Jake Benzing Jake Benzing Jake Benzing 6'2" | SG Solon | 2024 State IA scored 17 for the winners with Gehrig Turner adding 13 points and seven boards. Vince Steinbrech scored 10, while Oaken Foster chipped in with eight points and seven boards.

SUBSTATE 7

-Eighth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock (16-5) faces Pella (13-9) Thursday after Go-Hawks took care of South Tama, 64-34, on Monday. They received 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block from junior Cole Marsh Cole Marsh Cole Marsh 6'6" | SG Waverly-Shell Rock | 2024 State IA . Noah Frazell Noah Frazell 6'1" | SG Waverly-Shell Rock | 2024 State IA and Luke Frazell Luke Frazell 6'4" | SG Waverly-Shell Rock | 2025 State IA added eight points apiece for the victors.

-Pella knocked off Knoxville, 88-35. Senior Cam Schulte posted a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) for the Dutch with Cameron Rowe, a junior, contributing 11 points, five boards and five assists.

-No. 9 Williamsburg (18-4) overpowered Benton, 76-63, on Monday. Derek Weisskopf Derek Weisskopf Derek Weisskopf 6'3" | SG Williamsburg | 2024 State IA scored 31 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Raiders, who also received 15 points and six assists from Madox Doehrmann, a senior.

-Des Moines Hoover (13-9) travels to Williamsburg Thursday after the Huskies defeated Grinnell, 68-27. Senior Chase Henderson Chase Henderson Chase Henderson 6'0" | PG Hoover | 2023 State IA registered 28 points and seven assists for the winners, while Elijah Vos Elijah Vos Elijah Vos 6'4" | SF Hoover | 2023 State IA (15) and Malakai Johnson-Bassey (10) also scored in double figures.

SUBSTATE 8

-Top-rated Bondurant-Farrar (21-0) took down Carlisle, 90-44, on Monday. Senior Colby Collison Colby Collison Colby Collison 6'4" | SF Bondurant-Farrar | 2023 State IA has paced the Bluejays this season with 20.4 points a contest, while teammate Jaxson Fried Jaxson Fried Jaxson Fried 6'6" | SF Bondurant- Farrar | 2023 State IA has scored 16.6.

-Bondurant-Farrar next faces Clarke, who bested Creston, 71-63. Junior Jack Cooley Jack Cooley Jack Cooley 6'5" | PF Clarke | 2024 State IA has averaged 20.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game for Clarke.

-Glenwood (15-7) advanced with a 60-55 victory against Atlantic. Senior Risto Lappala’s 14.5 points a game have led the Rams in ’22-23. Logyn Eckheart has chipped in with 12.3 and 7.9 rebounds.

-Glenwood plays host to Harlan (15-5) on Thursday after Cyclones beat Lewis Central, 54-43. Franz Reisz scored 15 and grabbed 10 boards for the victors. Teagon Kasperbauer (14) and Will Arkfeld (10) also scored in double figures.
