Joseph Bean

Bean impressed me the first time I watched him at Iowa City West last season. Then, he played at Xavier. This season, he could be the piece Kennedy needs to reach the mountain top. Bean is a power guard, if that makes sense. He’s a back-court performer with physicality on both ends of the court. He leads the Cougars in rebounding , ranks second in scoring and third in assists. He’s a handful.

In two viewings last week, Bean averaged 17.5 points on 14-21 shooting (2-7 3P), 9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and a steal in wins over Iowa City West and Hudson. His work on the glass in both games, coming from his point guard position, is of note. He’s a physical guard who makes strong contact on his box outs, and he has a nose for the ball, attacking the high point and pulling down boards routinely. Against Hudson, he pulled down 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. A talented passer who sees the floor well, he’s in complete command of the game when he has the ball in his hands. He’s a capable perimeter shooter who shoots it equally well off the dribble and the catch, but he’s at his best when he’s using his change of pace, ball-handling, and strength to play downhill and get to the rim.
