Continue ReadingIt’s rare for freshmen to get playing time at Covington Catholic but it’s even more rare for those freshmen to be starters. That’s the case with McGillis who is starting and is the 4th or 5th option for a Colonel team that has their sights set on getting back to Rupp Arena. Athens is primarily a shooter right now but he’s a good one, making over 40% of his threes this season. As he grows and fills out, Athens is a player to watch in NKY long term.
Highlights
Blakey is a long and wiry forward who primarily plays in the post but has the trajectory of becoming a big wing down the line. At 6’6, Landon is pretty athletic and has flashed some skill with his ball handling and shooting. Projected to grow to 6’8 or 6’9, Blakey could be a sleeper pick to eventually crack the top 5 or 10 in the class as he keeps developing.
Owens is off to a hot start in his high school career as he’s averaging over 13 points per game for Bryan Station while playing most of the game with the ball in his hands. Long term, Amari has to continue improving as a shooter but he is already an above average slasher who is a good decision maker with the ball. Keep an eye on Amari in Lexington.
Highlights
Staying in Lexington, Trae is a big time prospect in terms of upside with his length and athleticism. Cayson is a menace on defense with his ability to play the passing lanes and create deflections and steals. While his skill level still needs to improve, Cayson has the physical traits to be a lockdown defender and a nice slasher off the wing.
One of the names to file away for the future, Faulkner could be the next great Western guard. He is going to have to wait his turn to get a bigger role but Bryonn has all the tools to be a difference maker for the Warriors. With good size and length and quickness, the 6’1 guard would be playing a lot of varsity at about any other team in the city. He needs to continue improving shooting and decision making long term but look for Faulkner to be a breakout candidate sooner or later.
