A look at the top 16U players to watch this weekend at the Prep Hoops Battle at the Lakes...

[player_tooltip player_id="1203029" first="Evan" last="Anderson"] - 2024 - SG - Wisconsin Playmakers UA Rise

Sneaky good prospect in the 2024 class. Anderson has really good positional size at 6-foot-4, can shoot from all areas of the floor, and has surprisingly good ability to attack the basket for his frame. Anderson thrives at getting two feet in the paint and being able to score off balance. Again, a better athlete than he looks, Anderson has some effortless bounce when he gets near the rack.

[player_tooltip player_id="1144570" first="Ty" last="Fernholz"] - 2024 - SG - Wisconsin Blizzard

Expect Division 2 programs to be crawling all over Fernholz by next year. A knockdown, lights out shooter, Fernholz is one of the best players in the state at using screens to free himself off the ball. The 6-foot-2 sophomore can also create matchup problems and take smaller guards down on the block in the high post and connect on fade away jumpers or post up opportunities.

[player_tooltip player_id="1142121" first="Tim" last="Franks"] - 2024 - SG - Chapman Basketball Academy

One of the best catch and shoot threats in the state, Franks is an automatic shooter if left open. Even if you get a challenge, if Franks gets in a rhythm and can step into his shot, all you can do is hope he misses. A lanky, 6-foot-4 wing, Franks still has a lot of growing into his body to do, which should excite Division 1 and Division 2 schools. Franks is also an underrated shot blocker that uses his length really well to get his hands on the ball without having to leave the ground and commit fouls.

[player_tooltip player_id="1193234" first="Will" last="Hornseth"] - 2024 - PF - Wisconsin Blizzard

Hornseth is the best post prospect in Wisconsin’s 2024 class. The De Pere standout already holds offers from St. Thomas, UW-Green Bay, and Toledo. At 6-foot-8, Hornseth has a lot of prototypical skills that you look for -- soft hands, strength, passing ability against the double teams, fluid footwork, mobility and transition athleticism, and some budding versatility. Hornseth can also step away from the rim and shoot it. His stroke looks really good, which makes you think he can play his way to the high major level.

[player_tooltip player_id="1142122" first="Michael" last="McNabb"] - 2024 - CG - Chapman Basketball Academy

A smart, high-IQ player who can take over games as a scorer or facilitator, McNabb brings a lot to the table. He’s probably better suited as a bigger point guard at the next level, but McNabb can also play off the ball and work as a 3-point shooter or wing slasher. The lefty works really well in the pick n’ roll, stays patient, and has a variety of finish types. Also a plus defender, McNabb racks up steals, blocks, and charges throughout a weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id="1260947" first="Sam" last="Mickelson"] - 2024 - F - Team FVV

Back from injury, Mickelson is an intriguing combo forward on the rise with top 10-15 ability in this class. The 6-foot-6 sophomore is a very good mid-range shooter who can flash to the high post and let it fly. Mickelson is also showing flashes of being able to handle the ball on the perimeter, size his man up, and attack off the bounce. Also a strong defender, especially in the paint, Mickelson has a rugged, bruising style and just doesn’t willingly give up much near the rim.

[player_tooltip player_id="1203205" first="Nolan" last="Minessale"] - 2024 - SF - Chapman Basketball Academy

Maybe the fastest-rising player in Wisconsin’s 2024 class, Minesalle is set to make a big jump in the next rankings update. A bouncy athlete with a ton of length, Minesalle can impact the game in a lot of ways. The 6-foot-5 sophomore is a very good slasher who gets off the ground quickly. He can mix in the 3-pointer and relentlessly hits the offensive glass. Some good defensive versatility here as well. Minesalle has the lateral quickness to stick with guards on the perimeter and the length to block/alter shots against bigger players inside.

[player_tooltip player_id="1203240" first="Carson" last="Pendleton"] - 2024 - W - Team 1848

Pendleton is a plug n’ play type prospect that gives his team a lot of potential lineups. The 6-foot-5 sophomore plays some point, slashes from the wing, and will occasionally dip inside. Like the way he handles the ball in transition and makes decisions on the fly. Pendleton has some sneaky athleticism and is a long strider who covers ground quickly.

[player_tooltip player_id="1145649" first="Cody" last="Schmitz"] - 2024 - SG - Wisconsin Playmakers UA Rise

A big, strong, athletic guard, Schmitz is one of the best kept secrets in the state. The 6-foot-4 wing can score from all three levels and has some noticeable explosiveness about him. Schmitz has very quick feet for his size/build as well, which allows him to get by people off his first step or maneuver in traffic. His instincts are to never settle and relentlessly attack the basketball, but Schmitz is also a pure outside shooter. Good two-way ability here as well. Schmitz has the tools to stifle people defensively.

[player_tooltip player_id="1193219" first="Theo" last="Schofield"] - 2024 - SF - Wisconsin Academy

There’s a big value at the next level for matchup problems -- that’s what Schofield brings to the table. The 6-foot-5 lefty is a strong, athletic combo forward that can score with skill, finesse, or force. He’s still just scratching the surface, but Schofield shows major flashes when he handles in transition, takes defenders off the dribble in the halfcourt, and plays with his back to the basket. The talent is there. Waiting on the consistency and the ability to impact the game in other ways when his shot is not falling.
