is often overlooked due to the talent on this Dominican squad. Johnson receives some buzz, but his level of consistency through all four years of high school is truly amazing and largely goes unrecognized. He’s averaged 13.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game throughout his career, while shooting 42.1% from three. Johnson is a coach’s dream. He’s a consistent starting piece that plays his role well and provides efficient scoring volume from the three-point line. Johnson is shooting 31/79 (39.2%) from three through 10 games this year.

Derrick had a big second half to make things interesting late against Stoughton. He has one of the quickest shot releases in the state, and it makes him so dangerous running off screens to catch and shoot. Whereas early in his career he was mostly a catch-and-shoot threat, he’s improved drastically off the dribble. He’s able to recognize a bad closeout or a chasing defender and put the ball on the floor towards the basket. Possesses a quick floater that allows him to not only finish over size, but also avoid picking up any unnecessary charge calls. One thing that sticks out about Derrick is how the ball never sticks in his hands. He makes quick decisions and keeps the ball moving.

Derrick is one of the best shooters in the 2024 class, but he’s grown to become more than just a shooter. He plays with poise and seems to read the floor at such a high level. His release is lightning quick, and because of that defenders often rush to close out on him, and Derrick is great at recognizing a bad closeout and attacking it. So good at blowing by and then putting up a soft floater that rarely seems to miss. Johnson is very unselfish and if he doesn’t have a shot right away, he’s going to keep the ball moving. You’ll rarely see the ball stick in his hands as he’s constantly scanning the floor for open shooters or the opportunity to feed one of his teammates on the block. Keeps the game simple and it allows him to produce at a high level. Finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists against Pius XI.
