Continue ReadingIt’s early in their careers and they’re about to start their Sophomore seasons in high school. There is sure to be huge movement up and down the list over the years as we get eyes on more players. We expanded our list to 45 total players in this update. Here are the top 10 in the updated 2023 class rankings.
Reed Sheppard Reed Sheppard 6'3" | PG North Laurel | 2023 State #22 Nation KY , North Laurel – Sheppard is an electric athlete who can score the ball at all three levels and consistently puts up highlight plays by dunking on folks in traffic. He was a 34% shooter from three as a Freshman and as that number improves over the next few seasons, Reed has top 100 in America potential.
Cyr Malonga Cyr Malonga 6'10" | C Evangel Christian | 2023 State KY , Evangel Christian – Cyr is the great unknown. He has yet to play a game in Kentucky but has been offered scholarships by Illinois and Florida State, among others. Malonga is playing in the Bluegrass Fall League and will have a chance to justify his lofty ranking and offers against some of Kentucky’s top players.
Kaleb Glenn Kaleb Glenn 6'7" | SF La Lumiere | 2023 #64 Nation IN , Male – Kaleb is big and strong and finishes everything around the rim but is a work in progress on the perimeter. Glenn recently picked up his first offer from Georgia Southern but has mostly been MIA this summer without any summer ball for Male and only playing once or twice in AAU. He’s also playing in the Fall League and will have a chance to move back towards the top spot in the class.
Gabe Sisk Gabe Sisk 6'5" | SG Ballard | 2023 #232 Nation CA-N , Ballard – Sisk has had an explosive summer scoring the ball in various leagues and on different AAU teams. Coming off a solid Freshman season, Gabe is going to have a chance to be the go to scorer for the Bruins as a Sophomore and has the tools to be good defender. He’s another one who was in consideration for the top spot in the class.
Jacob Meyer Jacob Meyer 6'2" | PG Holy Cross Covington | 2023 #170 Nation GA , Covington Holy Cross – Meyer is essentially the Northern Kentucky version of Reed Sheppard Reed Sheppard 6'3" | PG North Laurel | 2023 State #22 Nation KY but doesn’t have the regional and national hype. Jacob can get into the lane and score it or kick out to teammates. In the open floor he’s among the best athletes in the class. Once he becomes a more consistent shooter from the perimeter, he should draw plenty of interest from colleges.
Grant Whitaker Grant Whitaker 6'3" | PG Murray | 2023 State KY , Murray – One of the big movers in this update, Whitaker is a scoring point guard who is highly skilled and is going to have a chance to be one of the highest scoring players that the first region has ever seen by the time he graduates. Grant is a name to know in the Commonwealth and could see recruitment take off with a little exposure.
Colin Porter Colin Porter 5'11" | PG Ashland | 2022 State KY , Ashland – One of the key cogs for the Tomcats last season, Colin can consistently score the ball and has for years since he was starting at Elliott County as an 8th grader. Porter will be a top player in the 16th region again this season.
Dallas Roberts Dallas Roberts 6'1" | PG North Oldham | 2023 State KY , North Oldham – Another guard who has been starting varsity for 2 seasons already, Dallas is shifty and skilled. He’s not going to blow you away athletically but Roberts can get to the rim and finish through contact consistently and shot an impressive 45% from three as a freshman.
Trey Skaggs Trey Skaggs 6'5" | PG Great Crossing | 2023 KY , Madison Central – Trey has high potential as a wing or stretch 4 who can put the ball on the floor and make plays. Skaggs is starting to bulk up heading into his Sophomore season and will need to continue improving his lateral athleticism to show colleges he can guard the wing. Once he proves it, his college stock could take off.
Jaylen Davis Jaylen Davis 6'5" | SF Madison Central | 2023 State KY , Madison Central – Davis has maybe the most potential on this list as he just keeps growing. Now 6’5, Jaylen’s frame is still long and skinny and will eventually add some muscle once his growing slows down. He’s a good outside shooter and should keep improving as a finisher as he adds some bulk.
