From creative passers to those that impact the game off the ball, the section has an array of under-the-radar players in this area of play. These four 2022 playmaking talents in particular are ones who are deserving of more attention.
Angel Navarro — Simi Valley
Following a breakout season, Simi Valley’s Angel Navarro has caught the attention of many within the CIF-SS rank. His game centers more on being a multi-dimensional scorer, but he has the knack to attack as a playmaker as well. When he is not knocking down shots from beyond the arc, Navarro is a talent who strives on finding open teammates, such as in drive and kick out sequences. The 6’2” guard also likes to bait defenders in order to open up space on the floor. In key sequences this past season, he hovered over to the weak side and attracted a double-team, which he then responded by dishing out a bounce pass in between the two and over to a cutting, wide-open teammate for a running layup. He certainly has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Navarro finished the season with multiple games of at least five assists.
Sam Slutske — Crossroads
Sam Slutske is one intriguing guard to watch. Playing alongside a potent group of scorers, Slutske is not one to take control on the offensive end as a scorer. However, he does make his presence known as a passer. He always strives on keeping the ball moving across the floor with the goal centered on finding the open man. The 6’0” guard also has good range in his passes and has an eye on the corners when driving to the basket. He is one who just makes the most of his minutes.
There is room for Slutske to grow as a passer and overall playmaker, but he has the potential to have a breakout campaign in this component of his game.
Caden Cantwell — Chaminade
Caden Cantwell can also be tabbed as an under-the-radar scorer, but his playmaking ability deserves recognition as well. He has good anticipation in his passing when it comes to laying off passes within the restricted area. However, his playmaking ability stems beyond just being a passer. The 6’1” guard does particularly well with his off-ball movement when it comes to spacing the floor and setting screens. He is simply just a team-first player.
As mentioned, Cantwell is one to watch as a scorer too, especially with his 3-point shooting form.
Jordan Torres — Camarillo
Jordan Torres is one to watch as a playmaking point guard as well. He possesses the ability to transition into an unselfish pass-first guard. This was seen this past season where he developed potent chemistry with standout 2020 guard Carter Alexander. He works well from the top of the key as he scans the floor for open shooters. He is agile on the ball and recognizes when to distribute passes inside to teammates making a quick off-ball run. His small size may present an issue down the road as a scorer, but it is not halting his ability to become an assertive playmaker.
