Gurney put together one of the most impressive weekends of the tournament and continued to open our eyes with his all around play. He played with poise and confidence, consistently making smart decisions and taking quality shots within the flow of the offense. Defensively he positioned himself extremely well, anticipating plays and making life difficult for opponents. Offensively he kept the ball moving, made the extra pass and understood when to facilitate and when it was time to take over. His basketball IQ stood out every game, and his steady leadership was a major reason Morgan Dawgs found success throughout the weekend

Gurney has all the tools to emerge as the leader Riverdale Ridge will rely on this season. With the ball in his hands he is confident, poised and capable of making the right read against any defense. He consistently breaks down defenders off the dribble, creates opportunities for himself and his teammates, and plays with a pace that keeps defenses guessing. Throughout the summer he proved he can score against quality competition while growing more confident every time he stepped on the floor. Now the challenge is carrying that momentum into the high school season. If he maintains that aggressive mindset and embraces the leadership role, Gurney has the potential to put together a breakout senior campaign and lead Riverdale Ridge to a successful year

We’ve written about Gurney before, but this was my first opportunity to watch him in person, and he lived up to everything I’d heard. He dictated stretches of the game by constantly putting pressure on the defense and playing at his own pace. There were multiple runs where he simply took over, but what impressed me most was his ability to read the second defender. Instead of forcing difficult finishes, he dropped off passes to teammates for easy baskets despite being the hot man. The scoring is real, but his decision-making is what has me wanting another look.

Gurney slides his feet quickly on the perimeter and communicates with his teammates where he’ll go next. Every team needs a glue guy who gels everyone together, and Gurney excels as a team player.
