We’ve said it for several months now, Gates has some of the best shot-blocking instincts in the country. The 6’7″ center from Gary West Side High School has made a strong case for himself as the top prospect in Indiana’s Class of 2029. His defensive prowess was on display once again in Kansas City as he blocked 19 shots in four games including 9 in Monday’s contest. He also averaged 10.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Up in the northern part of the state at Gary West High School is 6’7 center Prentiss Gates Prentiss Gates 6'7" | C Gary West | 2029 State IN . Gates is another 2029 prospect that expected to make a big leap this summer as his role for Gary West increases. He is an elite rim protector that takes a lot of pride on being one of the best defenders on the floor at all times. He is also very strong as a above the rim finisher, as well. A big man to keep an eye on.

blocked shots as a freshman…and that was the best I’d seen in Indiana in 15 years. The 6’8” lefty for Meanstreets 15u is SPECIAL on that end of the floor. Just finished a rim run dunk too.”

Prentiss Gates was the best rim protector I saw all weekend. He’s the type of prospect who can go a full game without scoring, and still be one of the most impactful players on the floor. I saw him in a matchup with Breakaway 15u where he blocked 4-5 shots while altering a handful of other looks around the rim. Already listed at 6’7, Prentiss has an impressive wingspan with the mobility to put himself in spots to make plays defensively. On the offensive end he showed the touch to finish with either hand, and was tough to stop when left isolated on the block.

This young big man just keeps getting better and better. Gates came off of the bench and made an instant impact on both ends of the floor for Gary West Side. The 6’7″ freshman displayed good hands making some tough catches, great all-around fundamentals, and a real knack for protecting the rim. He went on to finish with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a 56-47 win. The left-handed big man is one of the top prospects Indiana’s Class of 2029.

Gates’ best basketball will likely be several years down the road. However, he is already showing flashes of his insanely high upside. The 6’7″ left-handed forward/center caught our attention at the Charlie Hughes Showcase in June with his ability to finish on the rim run and on the roll. He is a fluid athlete, very long, and will continue to take steps forward as he develops physically and gets stronger.
