Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Always a sharpshooter since stepping on the court as a freshman, Thomas firmly established himself among the better guards in the Class of 2027 with a stellar junior campaign. Which saw his overall impact grow as he earned more opportunities to display his great feel for the game. Based on these clips, that evolution is continuing. Makes great transition reads and sets the table in the halfcourt with in control playing. He retains his college ready range with a mixture of spot up and pull up deep threes. Thomas is a good bet to have a long college career, similar to his older brother Micah Thomas (Putnam City North 2019).

Since Thomas’ freshman year, he’s been among the best shooters in the Class of 2027. He’s shined in that floor spacing role the past two years. Now has taken more of the reigns for the 6A contending Panthers. Has a bit of an unorthodox movement style, but is still effective at playing at his own pace. Can get to his spots off the dribble. Has his head on a swivel to swerve up sweet dimes for his teammates. This has been a breakout junior season for Thomas, and it feels like he could still jump a level or two higher.

Mekhi has continued to prove that he is one of the best shooters in the state. I watched him against Jenks, and he exploded from beyond the arc—pump fakes, sidestep threes, catch-and-shoots—anything PC North needed from the three-point line, he delivered. I spoke with Thomas and head coach DJ Lemons, and Thomas stated that Coach Lemons wants Mekhi shooting at least 10 threes per game. That should tell you exactly what kind of shooter Mekhi is.

A whole hosts of Panthers contributed with deep shooting. Including the sharpshooting junior who hit a pair of threes during a back and forth second quarter. This past year has seen Thomas grow as an all around player, but his ability to connect from distance was big last night. And will continue to be crucial going forward for a team with real Gold Ball aspirations. Which would be fitting for Thomas, as his older brother Micah won a Gold Ball with PCN as a junior in 2018.

Thomas has been a floor spacing threat for his first two years at Putnam City North. While he often made good decisions with the ball in his hands, he still had the awkward gangly movements of youth. Which limited some aspects of his game. Now the Panthers are replacing a strong senior duo and Thomas looks to have grown into his body. Making him ready to expand his all around game.
At the Expo, he sill shot it at a good rate from deep. In addition, he looked much more fluid and quicker off the bounce. With a rapidly developing bag of moves, including in the mid-range. PCN is expected to be one of the most talented teams in Oklahoma as they have senior size, exciting sophomores and outstanding depth. But don’t sleep on Thomas playing a bigger and vital role this season as they look for another State Tournament push.

The youngster has earned playing time as a floor spacer for the 6A Panthers. He’s a steady threat from three, who must always be accounted for. Especially when he’s set up in the corners. Look for his role to grow as he matures, as from watching him in recent summers on the grassroots circuit, Thomas has more to his game as a ballhandler and playmaker.

Thomas is already in the starting line up for Putnam City North, and knocking down big jumpers from beyond the arc. With a strong basketball IQ, look for his role to gradually expand throughout this season.

The freshman got his feet wet in his first bit of varsity action by connecting three times from distance. There’s more to come from the freshman’s game but he will fill an important role as a floor spacer. Previous viewings of Thomas on the local AAU circuit, have shown that he’s a heady lead guard that will often make the right read. He still seems to be a bit gangly while growing his body, which could pigeon hole him a bit as a shooter early on. But the foundation is there for him to mature into much more than a sharpshooter.

Similar to Forsythe at Dale, we have another 2026 guard who definitely has the DNA to be a high level prospect in the state when it’s all said and done. Putnam City North freshman guard

is the younger brother of former PC North point guard Micah Thomas. We got a chance to see Thomas a few times during the summer and he was playing up and showing out. He didn’t back down from any challenge during the early July weekend and had a great mix of playmaking ability, getting others involved and scoring. Just like several of the other guard prospects that are joining varsity teams that have quite a few upperclassmen and experienced returners, it will be interesting to see how Thomas makes an impact early on during his freshman season. But after watching him in person this summer and also factoring in the DNA, we’re going to go ahead and bet on Thomas to have a successful prep career.
