Johnson scored 16 points a game as a junior but the Fury saw something developing in Johnson last year. They put Matthew in a position to score the ball and Johnson did it in a way that led to offers from Wyoming, Minnesota State-Mankato, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Augustana, St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Duluth. Johnson has a great group of schools to pick from and he can develop well at all those programs, but I could also see Johnson fitting in in the Summit League if a team from that conference stepped up looking to bring him to their program.
A player that went from 15 points a game at a decent St. Louis Park team to fielding several NSIC offers as the go to guy for a top five 17u team in state, that was Matthew JohnsonMatthewJohnson

‘s short journey. And he has a bright future ahead as a senior and then as a college basketball player. One of the most explosive all around scorers in the state.
Matthew has been one of Minnesota’s biggest stock risers this spring and summer and he had a great final weekend of the season in Indianapolis. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard is very versatile on both ends of the floor. Offensively, his shots were falling from deep and he was finding success attacking the basket. Defensively, he is a great on-ball defender on smaller guards and can match up with wings and forwards.
Matthew’s play on both ends of the floor helped the Fury advance into the semi-finals of the 17u platinum bracket. Defensively he was a Swiss Army Knife of a player, guarding just about every spot on the floor. Matthew spent portions defending 6’9+ bigs, using his length to get up in passing lanes out on the perimeter, or pressuring smaller guards on the ball. He has a long frame combined with quickness off the floor to impact the game as a shot blocker. In the half-court he makes quick decisions off the ball, and is able to attack/finish with either hand off the drive.

Zurn that every time he let the ball go from the perimeter it felt like the ball was going in. This spot-up ability opens up driving lanes for Johnson off the dribble and he’s athletic and quick enough to get from the perimeter all the way to the rim. With an offer from Wyoming and interest from nearby low major D1s Johnson could be seeing interest pick up during the July live period.
