The speedy floor general looked ready to take a junior year leap at multiple times during the Irish’s win over the Cyclones. He had it going off the dribble early, hitting in the mid-range. Including a tough look at the free throw line to end the first frame. Schaffer’s strong play to end the first would start a theme of him having the ball in his hands late each quarter. Late in the second quarter he pounded the rock in a similar manner but instead of forcing a jumper, he found an open teammate for a triple. And late in the third, he extended the lead with a great finish at the rim.
The offensive production carried over into energy on the defensive end, as he was an energetic defender, using his quickness to harass ball handlers. A big junior year seems to be on tap as McGuinness looks to make noise in a new look Class 4A.

Schaffer has impressive burst and agility with the ball in his hands. He’s very effective when he gets the opposition on their heels with his combination of handles and quickness to create separation for pull up jumpers. When he gets into the paint, he can keep his dribble alive and find the openings to deliver passes to open teammates. The Irish are shaping up to have a strong junior class and with Schaffer at the helm will be looking to make noise in 4A this winter.

Game Watched: Cooz EliternIn this case, it was a floor general who got it cooking as a primary scorer. Schaffer started off with getting defenders on the the heels and draining shots in the mid-range He has a tight handle that he quickly translates into a fluid shooting motion. There were times he drifted on fadeaways/pull ups (which often ended in misses) but when set he looked automatic in the mid-range. The McGuinness guard’s shooting also translated into hitting from beyond the arc.
When he got deeper into the paint, he often looks to get baseline and find open shooters on kick outs. He leaves his foot to do so, which has some risk but he made good passes in this viewing. Late in the game on some of the drives he was able to score at the rim or draw contact for fouls.

is a high motor guard with a high IQ of the game. Schafer has rare love for the midrange and loves getting to his spots and rising above the defender. Jett has a strong capability of create a shot off the dribble and knocking down highly contested shots with ease. Schafer is lethal in transition using his speed to get downhill and agility to get creative when finishing at the rim. Jett is equally active on the defensive end with quick hands and great anticipation he consistently causes havoc for opponents combined with his high intensity play. Most definitely a young man on the verge to have a great summer.

A key part of a 2025 Next Level squad that went 4-0 in the 17U division, Schafer has a good combination of explosiveness and handles. He used those traits to consistently apply pressure on defenses by getting inside. Which created opportunities for his teammates when the defense collapsed on him. Sometimes he leans a little too much on jump passes, but the impressive hangtime he has when leaping led to a good success rate. Along with his handles that allow him to get by defenders, Schafter has a concise and compact pull up game. Look for more on the strong run by the 2025 Next Level squad, later this week.

Bishop McGuinness let one get away on Thursday as Southeast would run away with a first round win. And we’ll get into that more with a few Southeast standouts. But I was very impressed with McGuinness sophomore

. I believe this was my first time seeing Schafer in person and the first thing that literally jumps off the page about his game is his leaping ability. The sophomore has absolute bounce and some pure athleticism to his game. But with that comes some chaotic moments as he’s still trying to find his touch to go along with his athletic abilities. But all of that can be taught and practiced. The leaping ability and athleticism can’t be coached.
