Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the more electric guards in Oklahoma. Has the type of first step and quickness that he can’t be guarded in a phone booth. Makes him a dynamic driver, and a big time havoc causer on the defense end. Can change games with momentum swinging steals and scores. There’s a lot to like thanks to his natural gifts and heart over height mentality he plays with. A couple ares of improvements will be needed over the upcoming years. It starts with his jumper. When his feet are set from three, he’s solid and promising. But the clear scouting report on him is to sag off and go under screens. Which negates some of his quickness advantage. And while capable of exciting passes and moments, he’s not year a true real deal PG, who sees moves ahead and dictates a team. Improvement in those elements will make Nelson a monster to deal with as an upperclassman.

The sophomore nearly led the Irish to a double digit comeback, even tying up the game midway through the fourth. He’s an energetic guard, who is a nuisance on defense. Key part of the Irish’s pressure when they sped the game up, as his quick hands and quick feet make life very difficult for opposing ballhandlers. He’s a nightmare in transition, did a good job of often making the right plays to either get all the way himself. Or reading the defense and making the right passes with kickouts to shooters or finding open/cutting teammates at the rim. An encouraging sign were a pair of in rhythm catch and shoot threes he hit. Being a consistent shooter is the next step in his development. And starting by being a spot up threat will help open up even more driving lanes for the lightning fast guard.

The all action point guard is having a breakout sophomore campaign. It’s simple with Nelson, he can NOT be kept out the lane. Quick and compact, he’s like smoke through a key hole with the way he glides to the basket. And then at the rim he contorts himself to finish very well against taller foes. Energy giver with his tough scoring. He brought it down the stretch in an epic comeback win for a McGuinness squad that recorded a much needed win as they try to find their footing in Class 5A.

brought toughness every time he touched the floor. He finished strong around the rim, absorbed contact without flinching, and stayed in control throughout. His ability to take care of the ball and avoid turnovers made him a reliable presence, especially in high-pressure moments.

(JEB Elite) is a scrappy, high-energy guard who plays with a fearless mentality. He consistently looks to attack the rim and isn’t afraid to absorb contact, often finishing tough plays in traffic. Nelson’s aggressive style puts pressure on defenders, and his willingness to embrace physicality sets the tone for his team. Whether he’s driving hard to the hoop or battling for loose balls, his grit and determination make him a constant presence on both ends of the floor.

Brought great energy and a change of pace off the bench for the Irish. Has the ball on a string, with good quickness. Best example of his ability to change came late fourth when McGuinness was attempting to rally against 6A Edmond Memorial. Nelson blew by the defense, saw the defense collapse and made a great kick out to an open shooter. Then was the one to corral a loose ball in the backcourt for a steal, speed to the rim and get fouled for an old fashion three point play. Fun to watch freshman who is finding his legs for the potential Class 4A State Tournament squad.

Lightning quick and great handles, Nelson is currently a change of pace guard for Bishop McGuinness. Important piece of a promising group of 2027s and 2028s that aim to get the Irish back into the State Tournament picture over upcoming seasons. Should find spots to contribute this year with the room to turn into a complete floor general as he matures.

was one of the better on-ball creators in the freshmen class in Oklahoma throughout the summer. His ability to create space off the bounce was very impressive and showed flashes of being one of the better passers in the 2028 class. Nelson also communicates at a high level and helps his team get into position to create steals which led to a number of fast breaks. Nelson excelled this summer while pushing the pace in the open floor. He pushed the tempo with his eyes up to spot teammates ahead for easy looks and when the best option was scoring himself, his shifty handle allowed him to get to the rim or stop on a dime to hit pull-ups.

had a great weekend by being a nearly unstoppable scorer, flashing impressive playmaking abilities, and fighting for rebounds. He is as versatile as they come for a lead guard and earned top-6 honors. Nelson does a great job of taking over games when needed but is willing to share the ball to ensure the best looks.

had an extremely impressive showcase and was able to hit threes in rhythm whether they came from pull-ups or catch-and-shoot opportunities. He excels in creating space for himself and does a great job of getting his feet set before taking shots. Nelson was especially deadly from the corners as he was able to hit 5 corner threes in the 5v5 runs alone.
