By simply walking on the court, Kerr changes the game with his now 6’11 size. He’s a rim deterrent, and has made huge strides in embracing his height and becoming more of a battler round the rim. It was sink or swim for his final two years in that regard, as he’s coached by a coach who not only played for one of the best defensive minds in college basketball history. His coach can look him in the eye as nearly the same height.
Kerr embraced the coaching and swam. Consistently becoming better as a rim protector and rebounding harder. Which first lead to a State Championship last year. Then a commitment to Saint Louis. Now after competing nationally this past summer and with Owasso, he has a chance to close out his high school career competing for a second State Title.

. Kerr enters his senior season with hopes of helping Owasso repeat as 6A state champion and there is no better way to start this journey than by showing out against some of the state’s top competition. He is an interior force on both ends with the ability to stretch the floor to the perimeter which was clearly seen highly by D1 coaches as he has committed to play at the next level with St. Louis.

Jax was an unstoppable force under the basket in Team Trae Young 3SSB 17u’s win over 3D Empire during the evening slate of games. Kerr uses his length and wingspan to block shots at the rim as well as rebound at a high rate, while also creating opportunities for teammates on fastbreaks. He isn’t selfish with the ball at all, knowing when to take advantage of a mismatch or pass to a wide open shooter. I was impressed with Jax’s discipline on defense, not biting on pump fakes and staying planted with his hands straight up to change/deflect opponents shots. This was my first time getting to watch Kerr and he has a sky high ceiling.

Kerr has been one of the most popular Oklahomans of the summer, with new offers from Indiana State, Saint Louis, Sam Houston State, American and Green Bay. But on Friday night it was not his best offensive showing as his usually solid jumper was off. But the big man is continuing to grow on the defensive end and on the low block. Early in the game he showed good lateral movement to stay with a quicker driving forward, then used verticality to block the shot. Size can’t be taught, and over the last year Kerr has embraced that aspect of his game. And basketball has rewarded him back with the aforementioned offers and a Class 6A State Title at Owasso.

Over the last year, Kerr has turned from a player defined by potential into one defined by production. With elite size and good mobility, he’s turned into a quality rim deterrent with a good understanding of positioning and verticality to impact shots around the rim. The evolution of his defensive game was a key factor in helping Owasso to the Class 6A State Title. On a prospect level, the improved defensive ability is a big addition to the soft shooting touch Kerr has out to the three point line. In December, Kerr picked up a D1 offer from San Jose State. This weekend, he’ll be playing with Team Trae Young in Byran, Texas at the 3SSB Circuit. Which will give him the opportunity to add to his offer list.

The tallest player in Oklahoma’s junior class is finishing his campaign on a high note. He mixed in the jumpers he loved as a sophomore with a killer mentality around the rim. Finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds. When Kerr checked out the game with Owasso, he shared a hug and long talk with Owasso Head Coach Brian Montonati. The high upside junior has come a long way from this summer, his first at Owasso. Where at team camps Montonati would implore the big man to embrace his size and go dominant the post. With his soft touch to go with his size and improved motor, Kerr just did that on the biggest stage of the season so far. It’s a huge step forward for the Rams as a D1 prospect.

Joining Montonati in establishing dominance in the paint for the Rams, Kerr had a strong 16 point, 7 rebound, 3 blocks performance. The junior’s sheer size advantage makes him one of the top paint deterrents in Oklahoma. Especially as he has embraced the more physical aspects of basketball, and uses great defensive verticality principles to impact shots he doesn’t swat away. Owasso is striving for a Gold Ball, and Kerr’s impact is a big reason why. With a big spring and summer ahead at the 17U level against a national schedule, the big man will have opportunities to become a popular name among college coaches.

A newcomer to Owasso, the still growing forward prospect has adjusted well to life at the 6A level and become a more well rounded player. While he can still hit the occasional three pointer, he has embraced his height more this year and worked harder in the paint. The biggest benefit of his improved motor and mindset has happened on the defensive end where his verticality and size makes him a quality rim protector. He’s also starting to add more to his back to the basket game, and has quality touch around the rim. Size can’t taught and with Kerr embracing his height advantage, he’s one of the better bets the current junior class to become an impact college player.

Early on, the big man consistently used his height advantage on the low block with post ups and offensive rebounding. After he got it going around the rim, he then stepped out and showed his floor spacing ability with a triple. Kerr also continues to have strong verticality principles to contest shots at the rim. But foul trouble would hamper him in the second half and prevent what could’ve been a huge day from a production standpoint.
Still, this performance serves as another benchmark of his improved competitiveness around the rim from last year. And Kerr is set up for a strong end to his junior campaign before a pivotal spring and summer for his recruitment as he competes nationally at the 17U level.

At OSU Team Camp last June, Kerr drew the ire of his head coach for running the floor and attempting to spot up from three instead of running to the rim. At the time it was a great representation of what was missing from the 6 foot 10 junior’s game. Toughness.
So far through two games at the Tournament of Champions, the script has been flipped. He was a key part of Owasso’s strong interior defense, blocking 5 shots and altering even more. On the offensive end, he’s now attempting to dunk everything. The light has come on for Kerr, as he plays with attitude and aggressiveness around the rim on both ends of the court.
