enters the freshman class with an extremely rare advantage over his peers having already possessing significant varsity experience after logging minutes as just an eighth grader last season for Penn Charter (PA). Boyd stands out as a young guard with advanced ball skills and a natural scoring aggression, highlighted by smooth pace and craftiness off the bounce— excellent in the open floor playing with speed and finishing from difficult angles in traffic, showing flashes of his creativity off the dribble to navigate into the paint and finish with a soft touch and even confidently stepping into outside shots with smooth rhythm and strong balance. All while not letting his production and effort level take a dip on the defensive end of the floor, containing drives out on the perimeter and be extremely disruptive in turning ball handlers over. Although he won’t be asked to take on a major role immediately in his first season at Hun, it’s hard not to notice Boyd’s advanced skill set and the early flashes of his overall long term upside.

Boyd has the ability to play either guard spot, which he should put on display this season. The 6’3 guard plays with composure on the ball as he rarely gets rattled by on-ball pressure and threads passes to his open teammates in the half court. Boyd can finish in a variety of ways around the rim and sets his feet before he shoots. He pushes the pace well in transition and uses his quick hands to get deflections on the defensive end. Boyd’s ability to run the offense effectively is something that will help his stock throughout the course of the season.

One of the rarer prospects to have played up an age group for multiple years both on the high school and on the AAU side,

is a young, talented guard with legitimate ball skills and a natural feel for the game. In this early fall ball action, Boyd proved to be a seamless fit while demonstrating an advanced ability to play within the confines of the flow of the offense— making the right decisions with the ball in his hands particularly in advancing the ball up the floor in transition and drawing two off dribble penetration and spraying the ball out to open shooters. In the midst of all that, Boyd still maintained his natural scoring aggression, highlighted by hints of his creativity off the bounce to get in the lane and finish with soft touch.

Boyd has the benefit of being one of very few freshmen in the region with varsity experience already, as the smooth scoring guard played heavy minutes as an 8th grader last year for a highly-competitive Penn Charter (PA) team. He looks comfortable so far while making his transition to Hun, showcasing the same advanced pace, footwork, and crafty scoring touch that made him such a valuable secondary scorer for the Quakers last season. While he won’t be asked to carry too heavy a load as a freshman within the generally older prep school landscape, Boyd shows a lot of early indicators of a future high-level D1 prospect.

A high activity player who impacts the game with sharp defensive instincts, quick reactions, and timely shot making. He constantly relocates when defenses shift, finding open windows for clean looks before making decisive cuts to the basket. He has shown a knack for knocking down important shots when his team needs them most while also competing hard on the glass and creating extra possessions through his effort.

-Best young prospect that I have seen this offseason. Boyd impressed with his ability to handle ball pressure, maneuver through tight gaps in the defense, hit perimeter jumpers, and play-make with either hand off the bounce. To see a rising 8th grader handle the ball as a primary without getting sped up or turning it over against a postgrad team full of athletic piranhas bodes well for his future as a floor general. Boyd also showed that he can excel off the ball as a knockdown shooter that can also serve as an effective connector for the wings. His ability to attack closeouts and opt out of a shot mid-release for a teammate that is more open shows how advanced his feel is at this stage in his career. Love his long-term upside as a scoring point guard prospect that can do a little bit of everything while playing winning basketball.
