Expert Analysis
Brian Flinn | Prep Hoops Scout
A true point guard, Martinez lived in the lane during their opening round victory. The crafty and quick floor general had little issue knifing into the lane and either finding his big man for easy drop offs or kicking out to open shooters. He keeps his head up at all times, constantly surveying for where he may find the right pass to help his team get an advantage. As he gets stronger and becomes more of an offensive threat himself, look for college attention to come.

combines a tight and confident handle and poise against ball pressure with really good feel for the game and impressive court vision to really emphasize setting guys up and getting his teammates the ball in the right spots. Martinez does a really good job of maintaining his court vision to locate open guys on the court— finding open shooters, making sharp post entry passes, hitting look aheads in transition, and finding bigs in the dunker spot and short corner area around the basket. Martinez also impressed in a number of PnR actions with a lot of the reads he made navigating ball screens— operating with pace, passing feel as a distributor hitting divers, and even hitting cross court skip passes to find shooters.

demonstrated a lot of intangibles in a point guard that you establish trust in— keeping his vision when attacking off the bounce and creating for others, controlling the pace of the action, and not getting too sped up by ball pressure. The most impressive part of Martinez’s performance however had to be his finishing ability— proving to be a crafty finisher around the rim who demonstrated a really good understanding of certain angles not only finishing around the rim but also when attacking the basket off the bounce.

Martinez looked every bit the floor general, doing an excellent job of controlling the action with the ball in his hands and consistently making plays throughout the game. He lives in the paint, and whenever he gets into the lane, defenses are forced to make a decision because he is equally capable of finishing himself or setting up a teammate for an easy scoring opportunity. Martinez plays with a noticeable chip on his shoulder, bringing toughness, confidence, and competitiveness to every possession. He also found ways to contribute on the glass, securing rebounds and helping his team initiate offense. What stood out most was his ability to process the game in real time, making quick reads and reacting to what the defense gave him. His combination of playmaking, toughness, and basketball IQ makes him a highly effective lead guard who impacts winning in a variety of ways.
