Expert Analysis

Gavin Sykes was shooting the lights out for Modesto Christian in their game against Boulder Creek. He seemingly couldn’t miss, despite heavy defensive pressure. I was also a fan of how he competed and didn’t stop attacking. It was quite the performance from the Long Beach St. commit, despite Modesto Christian not getting the win.

has great touch around the basket with either hand and displays creativity offensively. He is a playmaker with smooth midrange shooting, good footwork, and the ability/motor to rebound at both ends. Sykes also excels at drawing contact when attacking the basket to get to the free throw line.

He plays at a high level against quality competition when it counts most. He’s a consistent scorer who can get a bucket in different ways, dropping open 3’s, and attacking the rim, he doesn’t shy away from contact, and comes from all angles for his points in the paint including jumpers. A 6’4 guard who rebounds, and can run the offense. Game 2: 11/9 29pts, 6R,

He’s no stranger to big game competition. The rising junior guard led his team in scoring with 19pts, scoring early and often in a variety ways. He gets out well attacking the rim in transition finishing with dunks. He dropped timely 3’s along the perimeter, and used his solid body to withstand blows finishing off drives into the paint. He might be underrated as a facilitator, with good handles, passing and decision making up top.

Sykes was named MVP for the event. He exploded for 31pts in game one, then continued with a balanced attack throughout the 3 games we watched. He looked quite confident, as he used his skill set to score in a variety of ways in transition and in half-court. He used hard drives, and strong finishes at the rim including dunks. By our count he had 5-3ptrs using his screens, and dribble to hit a couple in game one. He’s got some serious hops to go get rebounds and challenge shots at the rim.

Sykes had his combo guard skills on display in the two games on Sunday. He’s looking confident handling the ball up top, and making good decisions. Playing off ball he continues to grow his game. He’s taking, and making good shots, including strong drives into the paint, 3ptrs, he shot 50% 10-20 behind the arc, and finishing strong in transition. He averaged 14pts.

We’ve seen steady improvement from Sykes as we’ve gone deeper into the season. He’s a good basketball player, but sometimes with this group we don’t get the consistency. He’s getting things done across the board. He’s a confident, and aggressive guard who can get his own shot in more ways than one. He’s defending with good intensity. He’s the teams second leading scorer, 13.9pts
