Expert Analysis
Duvalier Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Gray is a 6’3 Swiss Army Knife for a team that is currently streaking and looking more like the team that we expected at the start of the year. They’re playing well and finally getting on the same page, and Gray is a big reason for that. Gray is the epitome of consistent and dependable, and it’s been that way since he was a sophomore. He’s battle-tested, he competes on both ends of the floor, and he rebounds with the best of them. He’s a player who makes plays without having to have plays run for him. He’s a defender who can guard multiple positions, he stretches the floor, and keeps the ball in rotation. He’s a glue guy and one of the secret weapons for a talented Fossil Ridge squad

Prepared for a larger role at Fossil Ridge, Gray has brought value as a strong guard with upside along the perimeter. Getting more comfortable as an on-ball playmaker, the guard looks ready to facilitate a decent portion of possessions for that high school program. Paired with the fairly strong frame as a guard, Gray should be able to control his one on one opportunities to a similar degree as in this pre-season.

Dependable operating within the offensive flow, Gray can be slotted into numerous lineups given his skill and positional strength. A wiry strong guard who handles contact well versus likesize or bigger matchups, this literal strength plays a big role in his recent success. At his best as a secondary creator who operates against a rotating defense, Gray has carved out a valuable niche at the club and high school levels.

One of the more consistent perimeter shooters in the class, Gray requires the defense to stay glued to him. Possessing plenty of gravity, the guard has done well leveraging the space for passes to rollers, often over the top into the low block region. The guard is a consistent downhill scoring threat, attacking immediately off the catch, showing value getting to double clutch layups mid-air.

Gray is an efficient complementary scorer, efficient from beyond the arc. Possessing a quick jumper off the catch, the guard can knock down spot-up attempts or flow into the shot from weak side actions. Likely a valuable floor spacer for a new look Fossil Ridge program, keeping tabs on Gray’s impact spacing the floor. Defensively, the guard is already fairly strong, effectively taking bumps and maintaining his balance versus backcourt opponents. His progression as a ball handler over the coming seasons will be intriguing, given his notable gravity beyond the arc.

He has good vision and was able to take defenders off of the dribble, kicking the ball out to the open man. He was a good on-ball defender and was able to get over quickly in help side as well, playing the passing lanes and getting a hand on the ball.
