It’s not just the top of the rankings that are crowded. Depending on the day, Realistically- the gap between 10 and 35 on this list is incredibly small. That being said, there will likely be plenty of 1-3 spot moves up or down for this group as a whole in the next update. 8 Players out of the 14 moved ahead of him were either not in the state or not in the class at the time of the prior update- speaking more to the quality of talent coming into the State. A shifty creator off the bounce, Yancey has looked more like a traditional lead guard and less like a scorer who wants to play on the ball. If that trend continues, he likely makes a rise back up.

A signature performance from Yancey, as the BX Cardinals (Cardinal Hayes) knocked off the BK Dawgz (Thomas Jefferson) 92-86 to open play on Saturday morning. The point guard was a terror in the open floor, often getting to the rim and finishing. He knocked down several threes as well, including two on the move in the final 2 minutes that effectively kept Hayes with a comfortable lead until the final whistle.

The Sophomore surprised us last year with his athleticism, vertical and on ball defense. This summer he continued that positive momentum, he looks more under control, making better decisions and has been valuing the ball. His ability to play minutes at both guard spots, take charges, bring energy and come up clutch impress us the most. Cardinals need him to be steady, on the court, a leader and someone this coaching staff can rely in late game situations good or bad.

Yancey would have been on our top shooters list if it wasn’t for one of his teammates. He returns to the Cardinals for another season as a major part of their back court and offense. His three level scoring ability, hustle, passion and defense are big components of his game. Hayes has really brought him along during his time on varsity and this season should be his best yet.

He finished a transition layup, blocked a jump shooter, and came up with a key steal to stop an offensive advantage. He got downhill quickly and finished with his left, showed solid on ball defense, and displayed good touch using the glass. He added another steal in transition that led to an impressive dunk. Overall, he seemed to be everywhere, making impactful plays from start to finish.

Yancey is a shifty guard who plays with great change of pace and keeps defenders guessing. He’s a skilled creator who can generate offense in tight spaces and make something happen late in the clock. As a scorer, he’s effective in a variety of ways, whether it’s pulling up off the dribble, getting to his spots, or finishing through traffic. He shows good feel as a playmaker too, reading the floor and making the right pass when the defense collapses. His confidence and shot-making ability give his team a steady source of offense when they need it most. Yancey has become a key piece for a talented Cardinal Hayes squad with real firepower around him. With his skill set and composure, he’s the type of guard who can swing big games in January and beyond.

He delivered a quick finish at the rim with a scoop layup and made a strong pass to Nazir Campbell under the basket. He caught the ball in the right corner and attacked the closeout, using a change of direction to get into a two dribble floater. He also served as a playmaker throughout the game, consistently helping teammates get quality looks. He played with speed yet remained efficient in everything he did.
