Expert Analysis
Van Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Bam is a dynamic playmaker! Quick and wiry strong. Sneaky athleticism! When focus has the ability to be a lock down defender and an almost un-guardable ball handler given his shiftiness and quickness. Quick release on catch and shoot 3’s, great range. Excellent pullup! Quick first step burst and quick. He has a nasty crossover dribble move and uses hesitation nicely, quick but has another gear to get to his spot or space on the floor. The backcourt mate of Anthony “Ant” Brown is a legit college level prospect in his own right. Finished the hard-fought game against Woodside from Newport News, Virginia with 15 points and took home the Game MVP.

-Bolding started off the 2H hot with two C+S threes and a transition layup to help Carroll extend their lead from 2 points to 9. He did a great job of finding his bigs in transition and getting diagonal drives across the court after catching the ball on the wing. Loved the way that he applied ball pressure at the POA and played with physicality navigating screens to force turnovers and deflections throughout the matchup. Want to see more consistency out of him on a nightly basis at the offensive end as his production will be crucial to the Lions’ success in big games this season.

-Bolding looks way more comfortable entering this season as a PG that has learned to play off his teammates to succeed both on or off the ball. The lift and consistency of his perimeter jumpshot have improved despite an uptick in FGA because he has learned when he needs to shoot and when he needs to move the ball. His vision has really improved even when tightroping his way through crowded spots on the floor like the baseline or sideline, delivering on-target passes that have some zip on them. Should be in the running for most improved player in the league as well as the All-Defensive team in the WCAC.

Stock-rising day in Richmond for Bolding as he rose to the level of intensity in their war against Petersburg (VA) Saturday morning. Bolding is a tough-nosed guard who can get downhill in a flash or when in the open floor, uses his end-to-end speed to blow by defenders doing what they can to sprint back and contest. Ant Brown mans the on-ball duties for much of Carroll’s games, but Bolding’s complementary slashing ability off the catch becomes clear on skip passes or quick swings. He showed confidence letting it fly beyond the arc with time and space. The results spoke efficiently as he canned three triples in this particular matchup. A pesky defender, Bolding pressures the ball from the opposing free-throw line and makes the course of a 32-minute contest quite the uphill battle for a guard who can’t handle pressure well.

-Bolding had a pretty good day at the offensive end of the floor but really stood out as a defensive menace for the Lions. Bolding can effectively lock down guards but also does pretty well on an island against bigger wings because of a quick set of hands and how he sucks up space by attaching himself to his defenders hip to make it extremely difficult to put the ball down on the floor. Bolding can push the pace, play off the ball as a shooter, attacks closeouts well in the halfcourt, and is an underrated rebounder for his size and position. The tenacity and aggressiveness always stand out when watching Bolding, he should be in for a big junior season this year.

Bolding has been impactful from the jump at Carroll, starting from Day 1 of his freshman season. He provides already-elite perimeter defense as a point of attack defender while distributing the ball well and getting to the line at the offensive end of the floor. How much he grows and how much his perimeter shooting develops will be key in determining his ceiling as a prospect
