Expert Analysis

The swingman is very deceptive with his game and flat out knows how to play. He found different ways to put the ball in the hoop. He has good positional size. He provided a spark as a scorer. Mahan reads and reacts to situations on the fly and takes what defenses give him. Even though he has positional versatility being able to play the two and the three. His defensive consistency could be a road block at the next level.

Lane has been one of the most consistent 3pt marksmen all season and in the first round of quarterfinals, the young guard really flourished with his ability to fill it up. He consistently puts pressure on the defense with his ability to get to the rim in a variety of ways. Whether cutting without the ball, attacking off the bounce, or converting second-chance opportunities, he finishes effectively around the basket. Dunmeyer also brings a motor on the defensive end and competes hard on both sides of the floor, making him a productive and impactful. Pump in 23 points in the blow-up victory over Ron Brown 82-44.

Lane continues to solidify himself as a clear scholarship-level piece for the Tigers. He’s a natural utility piece who sets the tone with his incredible energy, toughness, and ability to impact all facets of the game. Mahan is a solid defender who utilizes his quickness and physicality to overwhelm opponents on a regular basis. He reliably fills in the gaps as an offensive piece, showing the ability to initiate the offense, set up others, and score through penetration or pull-up jumpers. Mahan is extremely valuable to the success of Jackson Reed ability to capture the DCIAA title. Averaged 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal a game.

Given his No. 30 overall ranking, we’re clearly pretty high on Mahan and his showing in Salisbury gave us more reasons to remain in that line of thinking. He brings size, outside shooting with the ability to knock down 2-to-3 in a row and continues to show the want-to on the defensive end as well as the glass. Jackson-Reed looked strong in their two games as they claimed their bracket title while Mahan averaged 14.5 points on 57 percent from three, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 3.5 dimes per game.

Mahan is one of those shooters that make you think the ball is going in the second it leaves his hands. The release isn’t textbook, but there’s something about the fluidity that makes it look like such a confident stroke and although he struggled early to find his mark, he’d join Knight in the Jackson-Reed effort. The 6-foot-5 guard scored his 15 points on 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-7 beyond the arc.

After this weekend in Richmond, it’s clear that Lane is evolving his game very quickly. With the departure of grad JJ Massaquoi, Lane has stepped into his new role very confidently. He is beginning to create shots from himself with a handle on the ball that I have not seen before. Double-moves and pace-changing hesitations helped Mahan get his shot off against his opponents this weekend. As usual, he was effective all over the floor pulling in rebounds and rotating over to block shots at the basket. All-around dominating performance from the rising junior. Very excited to see his career continue to shape out.

-Felt appropriate to reward the hustle, unselfish play, and development that the JR wing has made over the past few months with a healthy bump up the rankings into our Top 40. Mahan plays a brand of winning basketball and has really upped his stock in a productive summer with the Washington Warriors 16u group on the 3SSB circuit. His ability to hit shots, wreak chaos both on and off the ball defensively, finish above the rim, and play within himself makes him a valuable piece for every team that he’s a part of. The motor and year to year development are good indicators that his stock will only continue to rise as he heads into what should be a breakout junior year in the DCIAA.

-Mahan is one of my favorite players to watch in the area as a chaotic and disruptive force for Jackson Reed. Mahan is a very effective slasher with above-average vertical pop, can hit C+S looks from the perimeter, hits the glass hard, and defends at a high level. With the graduation of several key pieces and the departure of their coach to the college ranks, the Tigers will need a big year out of Mahan to be successful.

Mahan has gotten better and better each time he steps in front of the scouts. His overall effectiveness on the game is tremendous to see game in and game out. Lane is beginning to transform past being a catch-and-shoot artist. Puts the ball down on the floor with ease now and has no problem taking shots off the dribble pull-up or taking it all the way to the hoop. Shown he can take contact on his route to the rim and will take it strong to the defenders at the rim. Love that he’s quickly expanding his game beyond already lights-out shooting touch. Spends all game hustling around the floor and pulling in loose balls/rebounds. He is sure to rise up the rankings and blossom into a top 10 guard over time.
