Xavier Harris – Horizon
Horizon is a team to watch not only for this year but the next couple of years as they will surely be exciting. They have some of the best young talents that the state has to offer and in Monday’s game, it was their sophomore point guard that led the way. Harris is a true point guard that will surely be playing at the next level and the scary thing is he continues to get better. They are 4-0 on the season and ahead the Front Range and their Harris is leading the way in scoring at 15.3 points a game. He has a talented bunch around him that makes things easier for him, he is an aggressive downhill runner that reads what the defense gives him and in their 76-57 win led the way in scoring again as he put up 17 points. Horizon is a team that plays with a ton of chemistry, they are an unselfish bunch and with a guard like Harris leading the way will continue to turn heads. A big day from the sophomore.
Jalen Weaver – Smoky Hill
Smoky Hill versus George Washington was what we pegged as the game of the week and it surely did not disappoint as it was one of the most entertaining games that I have been to in recent history. There were highlight plays, there were plenty of made baskets to go around and a playoff-like atmosphere where both teams truly wanted it. The best player in the game – Jalen Weaver. Weaver has that “it” factor to him. He plays under control, he is not afraid of the moment and he is the calm to the storm. He has a nonchalant game that things seem to slow down for him and on Monday night he was dealing as he wowed me with 32 points on the night. It wasn’t just that he had 32 points, but how he got it. He finished through traffic, he had a couple of highlight dunks, showed that he could shoot the ball and I do not believe that he took one bad shot in the game. He is only a junior and has quickly risen to the top as a top-5 player in the entire state in my honest opinion. He defended well, was the emotional leader for his bunch and put the state on notice – I think I heard someone call him “da problem,”
Makes sense.
Jaden Stoffel – Manual
Stoffel is a player that we were really high on as he was one of the top players in all of 3A last season and wanted to see more of him this summer but did not get the opportunity to. Well, in his first game back with the target on his back as the state champ he came out with a bang. Stoffel helped his 3A team get their opening game win against 5A Broomfield and he was the best player on the court. He began the season with a game-high 30 points and showed off his range as he knocked down multiple 3-pointers in the game. Not only that but he also showed that he is able to take over in multiple ways. He finishes at the rim, shows off a bit of athleticism and also breaks down the defense for plays to teammates. He is going to be the focal point of the offense this year and based on his first game he understands that and is ready for the challenge. 30 points in the first game are not bad, not bad.
Jaylen Carrizales – Vista Peak
Carrizales is a player that we got the opportunity to see a few times this summer as he jumped off of our radar as a player poised for a big season and he did not let us down as he finished with a career-high 19 points. He knocked down three 3-pointers and it was only the scoring that has him as a Monday standout but was able to grab four boards and also dish out four assists as well. This Vista Peak team is going to give teams fits all season long as they have so many players that are capable of getting going. Now adding a guard like Carrizales to the mix that is a shifty guard that must be defended at all times that can play off the ball as well it makes them an even more dangerous team. He is a player to take a deeper look at this season and his 19 points were a game-high and another weapon that the Bison can use this upcoming season as they have very good guard play.
Christian Speller – Rangeview
Defending 5A champs, Rangeview, flat-out blasted Prairie View in one of the most lopsided games that we will see this season. They went well over the century mark and had multiple players finish in double-figures and their leading scorer was Christian Speller. Speller finished with 24 points and was very efficient from the field (10-14). Of those four misses, three came from the 3-point line where he did manage to hit one. He also rebounded well finishing with six boards and also dished out four assists as well. Speller will have to have nights like this no matter who he is playing if the Raiders plan on going back-to-back. He is a player that can score from all three levels and has the green light with this bunch. He is going to continue having big scoring days and it is great for Rangeview to be able to call on him when needed.
