The Broomfield High School junior was a key role player for the Eagles last season and produced valuable minutes off the bench. Now that he’s in the starting lineup, he’s quickly developing into a go-to guy on a talented Broomfield roster.
“It’s pretty wide open,” Broomfield head coach Terrence Dunn said of Swenson’s burgeoning recruitment. “He came off the bench for us last year and he’s been really huge for us this season so we’re just starting to explore the recruiting stuff right now.”
Swenson, who plays with the Colorado Titans club program in the summer, is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard who also spells senior Steven Croell (CSU-Pueblo football) at the point. He has a 3.3 GPA and is averaging 13.2 points, 2.4 assist, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.
The quick and athletic Eagles junior, who is also beginning to start exploring opportunities as a wide receiver, has really taken off since the Eagles (9-10, 5-3) hit their Front Range League schedule. He is averaging 16.3 points, four rebounds and two assists a night in conference play, and is shooting 47 percent overall while sinking 20 3-pointers in eight conference games.
Over the Eagles’ past four games, Swenson is averaging 19.25 points a night.
“A lot of our success in league play has been a result of Grant’s increased scoring,” Dunn said. “I had a conversation with him the other day about potentially D-II but even D-III or NAIA schools and trying to get on some school’s radars. He might fit that mold a little bit more because of his size but we are going to start having him playing the point more, especially next year, which might make some more of the D-II schools become more interested.”
Two other Broomfield with the combination of size and skill that could have potential as basketball recruits, Ryan Collins and Jack Stoker also might end up playing baseball and soccer, respectively, at the next level.
A left-handed pitcher, Collins is developing into a skilled basketball player at 6-foot-8. Stoker is a talented goalkeeper but is also coming into his own on the basketball court and is listed at 6-foot-7.
