Prospect Intro: Nik Sorrell (2020)
Glasgow had one of their best seasons in recent memory in 2017-2018 and look to build upon that in 2018-2019 as they return the core of their team and will look to win the 4th region. Nik Sorrell is a large reason for their success last season and their high hopes for the upcoming campaign. Sorrell started every game for the Scotties as a sophomore and was second on the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game. Nik also added 4.1 rebounds per game while running the team from the point guard spot. I recently caught up with Sorrell to discuss his sophomore season, 16u AAU and high hopes for his Junior year.
PHKY: Describe your game for people who may never have seen you play. What are your strengths? What do you need to improve?
NS: I’m a point guard who loves to attack the basket and find my open teammates. I like to control the tempo of the game and have the ball in my hands to set up the offense. My strengths would be my ball handling, finding the open man, attacking the basket, good anticipation on defense and being a floor general. I try to be an extension of my coach on the floor. I’m working on improving every aspect of my game. I’m always trying to consistently improve my jump shot and defense. I also work hard off the court inside the classroom. My current GPA is over 3.7 and I will be taking the ACT this month as well.
PHKY: Reflect on your high school season. Were you happy with your individual performance? Were you happy with your team results?
NS: My team’s high school season went very well this year. At the end of our 2016-2017, we had a record of 4-24. We finished our 2017-2018 season with a record of 22-9, including a 15th District Championship and a birth to the 4th region tournament. I was really happy with my overall performance and extremely happy with the success that our team achieved last year.
PHKY: Who are you playing AAU with? How is your season going so far?
NS: I’m currently playing with Team Vision during AAU season, coached by Coach Cameron Jackson and Coach Jarrin Taul. My baseball season didn’t allow me to play as much in the spring as I wanted to but our team has performed pretty well in various tournaments in Kentucky and Indiana. Currently, I am gearing up for the summer sessions with my High School team and AAU team, I am determined to go out and compete in every game.
PHKY: What can you take from your AAU season and apply to your next high school season?
NS: What I want to take from the AAU season is just to continue to be a good floor leader, continue to make good decisions on and off the court and continue to develop my shooting and defensive skills. I am spending the summer getting physically stronger and mentally sharper on the court.
PHKY: What are your goals for your next high school season?
NS: Some of my individual goals for next year’s high school season include: continuing to develop as a floor general, averaging double digit assists every game and being a key rebounder from the PG positon. My overall goal for my team would be to be able to compete in the Kentucky Boys Sweet 16.
Glasgow is likely the early favorite to win the 4th region next season and Nik Sorrell is a big reason why. Sorrell is likely going to be the top point guard in the region next season and will be joined by fellow junior starters Kobe Brents and Jaden Franklin to form one of the best trios in Western Kentucky. As Sorrell continues to improve as an outside shooter, he is likely to draw attention from college coaches and have the opportunity to show he can play point guard at the next level. In the mean time, Sorrell is going into July seeking wins and college offers while preparing for a potentially huge 2018-19 season for the Scotties.
