Nobody knows more about the freshman class than we do at Prep Hoops Indiana after holding our annual Freshman Showcase in August that featured over 200 of the best incoming prospects in the Class of 2027. Now, those players are almost finished with their respective freshman seasons. Let’s take a look around the state and highlight eight prospects who have stood out with their immediate impact on the Indiana High School Basketball scene.
***There are obviously many more freshmen than these eight making big contributions at the varsity level. We are aware of them and will highlight more names in the coming weeks. However, these are the eight we went with today.***
One of two elite, standout freshmen for the Prep Hoops Indiana Class 4A #2 Fishers Tigers, Gardner. Jr is averaging 7.8 points to go along with 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. The super quick, dynamic playmaker has had no trouble adjusting to the speed and pace of the varsity basketball in the Indianapolis area. Coach Winegar has a really bright future with his freshman guard duo.

Part of a loaded freshman class at Fort Wayne Snider High School, Hogue has been the most productive of the bunch at the varsity level this season averaging 9.8 points per game. The 6’0″ guard is a good perimeter shooting threat that also possesses the athleticism to attack closeouts and finish at the end of his drives. One of the more talented freshman prospects in the Fort Wayne area.
It does take long to realize why high-major college programs already have this prospect on their radar. Lampley is not built like your typical freshman. He is 6’6″ with long arms and sturdy frame. Those physical attributes, which he pairs with a high skill level for his size and age, has allowed him to hit the ground running at the varsity level for Prep Hoops Indiana Class 1A #8 Tindley. He is averaging 10.1 points and a team-leading 5.7 rebounds per game.

One of the top prospects in the Class of 2027 at the national level, this 6’7″ phenom from Evansville Reitz High School has wasted no time making his name known in the state of Indiana. Mitchell is leading the Panthers in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals averaging 16.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. His unique combination of physical strength and skill has led to several offers from high-major programs from across the country.

Up in northern Indiana, this LaPorte High School prospect is one of the best around. Ott-Large, a name that is certainly familiar to people in that area, is averaging 8.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game for the Slicers. His playmaking has translated right away both as a distributor for his teammates and when creating his own shot.

Parker has stepped in right away at South Bend Washington and averaged 14.6 points per game as a freshman. He is a shifty, talented 5’10” guard that plays alongside the #1 ranked Class of 2026 prospect in the state of Indiana as well. The future is bright at South Bend Washington with some excellent young talent and Parker is obviously a big part of that equation.
There aren’t many freshman who can step in and immediately lead their team in scoring. However, that is what Tonagel has done at Oak Hill High School. The highly skilled 5’10” point guard is averaging 16.7 points and 5.4 assists per game while shooting an impressive 46-102 from beyond the arc. He is very close to reaching coveted 50/40/90 status on the season which would be incredibly impressive for a freshman.

There aren’t many freshmen who come in and contribute right away at the Class 4A level in the Indianapolis area. However, that hasn’t kept this freshman point guard from playing a major role for arguably the best team in the state. Zachary plays well beyond his years in terms of basketball IQ and maturity. He is a very good shooter, an elite passer, an excellent on-ball defender, and someone you can trust at a high-level with the ball in his hands despite being so young. In over a decade of scouting he processes the game at as high of a level as any freshman I’ve seen in the state of Indiana. Zachary averages 7.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 2.1 steals per game for Fishers.
