Continue ReadingCourbat is a high-upside forward with the ability to make a major impact as a versatile, switchable defender. He has great timing and instincts on that end of the floor and is one of the best shot blockers in the state, turning away 2.6 shots a game as a junior. He has always provided value with his ability to rebound and defend, but his offensive game has come a long way over the last year, showing more confidence in his ball-handling and ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim for finishes. He may never be a major scorer at the next level, but he’s going to help a team in a major way.
A 6-2 combo guard, Thomas is an elite shooting threat who buried 46.2% of his 3-point attempts as a junior while averaging 15.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists a game. Throughout his high school career he has shown that he can play either as a facilitator or an off-ball shooter, which will benefit him as he moves to the next level. He’s a good on-ball defender who moves his feet well and gets into passing lanes. Expect to see him playing with the ball in his hands even more as a senior following the graduation of Garrett Hempen.
McCain missed his junior year after tearing his ACL during his 16U summer, but is back healthy now and coming off a good 17U summer with the Barnstormers. An athletic guard who relies on his speed on both ends of the floor, he puts constant pressure on opposing teams with his ability to break down a defense and get into the teeth of it, either finishing at the rim or finding open teammates. He’s a high IQ guard who protects the ball, loves to get his teammates involved, and is an adept scorer when the situation calls for it. He averaged 12.1 points and 4.7 assists a game as a sophomore.
Ries is headed to Iowa to play linebacker, but he’s still a dominant force on the hardwood as well, coming off a junior year in which he averaged 23.1 points and 10.2 rebounds on 49-36-75 shooting splits. He’s an explosive athlete who skies above the rest of the players on the floor to pull down rebounds, and when he gets a head of steam going towards the rim, good luck trying to slow him down. He finishes through contact with ease, and has improved as a perimeter shooting threat, adding a fairly consistent jumper to his arsenal.
The 6-3 wing was a major beneficiary of the unfortunate McCain injury, putting up huge numbers as a junior. He averaged 22.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists on 47-38-81 shooting splits and then followed it up with a really good summer with the Mavericks. He’s a good shooter off the catch with unlimited range, and he has improved as a ball-handler and shot creator over the last 12 months. He uses his size well as a rebounder and defender.
Highlights
Few players in the state had a better spring and summer than Williams did with the Mavericks. He was dominant as a scorer and rebounder, controlling games nearly every weekend with his combination of length, athleticism, and talent. Primarily used as a back-to-the-basket forward in high school, he was impressive as a face-up weapon throughout the summer, showing the ability to stretch the floor or attack off the dribble, an added weapon that makes him even more dangerous. He has a great second jump and is a relentless rebounder on both ends of the floor.
Marsh has accepted a preferred walk-on position with Iowa as a tight end, but if he had pursued the college basketball route, coaches would certainly be intrigued. He’s a big wing who can really shoot it (40.7 3P%) both off the dribble and the catch. He has improved as a shot creator and contributes on the glass on both ends of the floor.
Few players in the state shoot it as well off the dribble as Miller does. He has one of the best mid-range games in the state, with the ability to stop on a dime and elevate into his jumper. He’s a tough guard with the strength to finish through contact around the bucket, and he’s a good playmaker who sees the floor well. He averaged 26.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists a game on nearly 51% shooting as a junior for the J-Hawks.
Highlights
Hinz was really good as a junior for the Cardinals, averaging 14.3 points and 3.2 assists a game while shooting 42% from behind the arc. He’s a quick, athletic guard who can play with or without the ball in his hands. He sees the floor well, gets his teammates involved, and is a really good shooter off the catch.
Highlights
Pflughaupt projects as an ideal 3-and-D wing at a small school. He has great length and instincts on the defensive end, getting into passing lanes and contesting shots at a high level, and he can stretch the floor with a feathery stroke from the arc. He rebounds well on both ends of the floor and is a good enough ball-handler to occasionally initiate some offense. He averaged 15.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks a game as a junior for the Lynx.
