Today, we will be continuing my “Bluegrass State Standouts” series as we continue to break down some of the top players in each position. After covering some of the best junior talents in the state, it’s time to move onto some rising sophomore point guards that impressed last year. Here’s my list of the top 2026 point guards in Kentucky to keep an eye on this upcoming season.
At the top of my list of standouts is Taylen Kinney Taylen Kinney 6'1" | PG Newport | 2026 State KY , a 6-foot-1 point guard at Newport High School. Kinney was an explosive weapon on both sides of the floor for the Wildcats during his freshman stint of high school basketball last year. In 34 contests, Kinney was the second-best scorer and one of the top rebounders on Newport’s roster, picking up a grand total of 472 points and 131 rebounds, averaging 13.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. The rising sophomore out of Newport, KY. additionally shot 47.0% (173-368) from the field, 36.4% (64-176) from beyond the arc and 73.8% (62-84) from the free throw line. In addition to solid size and speed, Kinney impresses me with his versatility on both sides of the floor and his ability to sink shots from deep, drive to the rim and grab rebounds.
Highlights
At number two on my list is DeMarcus Surratt DeMarcus Surratt 6'3" | CG Frederick Douglass | 2026 State KY , a 6-foot-3 point guard at Lafayette High School. Surratt was one of the most reliable talents on the Generals’ roster during his freshman season of high school basketball last year. In 27 games, Surratt was the second-best scoring machine and the third-best rebounder on the team, collecting a total of 372 points and 100 rebounds, averaging 13.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. The rising sophomore out of Lexington, KY. additionally shot 44.0% (133-302) from field goal range, 30.3% (30-99) from behind the three-point line and 71.0% (76-107) from the free throw line. With excellent size, speed and versatility, Surratt made a huge difference from the top of the key, showcasing strong passing, shooting, rebounding and a great overall team effort.
Finishing at number three on my list of standouts is Cole Edelen Cole Edelen 6'2" | PG Male | 2026 State KY , a 6-foot-2 point guard at Male High School. Edelen made a major impact on both sides of the court for the Bulldogs during his freshman stint of high school basketball last year. In 36 contests, Edelen was the second-best scorer and one of the more significant rebounders on the team, recording a total of 588 points and 71 rebounds, averaging 15.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. The rising sophomore out of Louisville, KY. additionally shot 46.6% (196-421) from field goal range, 44.4% (127-286) from beyond the arc and 86.2% (69-80) from the free throw line. With excellent size and speed, Edelen made a huge difference for his team, contributing strong ball control at the top of the key, smart and consistent passing and accuracy from range.

Claiming the fourth place spot on the list is Dayvone Harrison Dayvone Harrison 5'10" | PG Moore | 2026 State KY , a 5-foot-10 point guard at Moore High School. Harrison made a big difference on both sides of the floor for the Mustangs during his freshman season of high school basketball last year. In 13 contests, Harrison was the top scoring weapon and a significant rebounder on the team, recording a grand total of 212 points and 40 rebounds, averaging 16.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. The rising sophomore out of Louisville, KY. additionally shot 50.7% (73-144) from field goal range, 34.5% (10-29) from three-point range and 73.7% (56-76) from the free throw line. In addition to solid size, speed and versatility on both sides of the court, Harrison has strong ball control, quickness at the top of the key, smart passing and a strong jump shot.

In the fifth place spot on my list of standouts is Athens McGillis Athens McGillis 5'11" | CG Covington Catholic | 2026 State KY , a 5-foot-9 point guard at Covington Catholic High School. McGillis was one of the most explosive weapons on the Colonels’ roster during his freshman stint of high school basketball last year. In 31 games, McGillis was one of the best scorers and rebounders on the team, picking up a total of 153 points and 44 rebounds, averaging 4.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. The rising sophomore out of Park Hills, KY. additionally shot 41.0% (55-134) from the field, 34.9% (29-83) from beyond the arc and 66.7% (14-21) from the free throw line. With impressive size and speed, McGillis is a game-changer on the court, showcasing strong ball control, smart passing and pin-point accurate shooting from range.
