At 6 ppg Kyree may not be putting up eye-catching numbers on offense, but his defensive performances have been key for Hopkins this year. I thought he did a great job of forcing difficult looks out of Babou Ann throughout the game, making everything difficult for Maple Grove’s leading scorer. At 6’4 he can put a lot of length on guys, and moves well laterally to cover a lot of ground. He also came up with a steal and dunk in the second half that gave his team a big boost of momentum heading into the final stretch of the game. Nelson finished with 11 points and 2 steals in the win.

Kyree attacked the basket with no fear this past weekend. The freshman wing was very effective poking balls free and picking up steals on defense then converting them to offense on the other end. He has great speed when he has the ball in his hands with space in front of him, as he could outrun opponents on his way to the rim. He has the ability to finish with either hand at full speed and did not shy away from contact, sometimes from larger defenders. Nelson is a part of a solid young core that is being built at Cretin-Derham Hall and should be in for some varsity minutes next season as a sophomore.
