The second game was Parma Western at Chelsea. The Bulldogs came out on top by an 80-52 margin. While there was excellent basketball being played all around in these 2 games, 6 players stood out to me the most. Let’s take a closer look at these players and thir performances.
* The players will be listed simply in the order they appeared in my notes. They will not be ranked 1-6.
Peters was impressive this fall at the Prep Hoops Michigan Top 250 and he looks like he’s backing that showcase performance early in the high school season. Even in his team’s defeat, he made his mark on the game. Peters did an excellent job drawing contact, playing through it, and getting himself to the free throw line. He was especially effective going right and playing off 2 feet.
Sanderson made himself the buzz of Hornet basketball talk around town. There where whispers wondering if any freshman on varsity at Saline had ever had a first game performance like he did. Sanderson not only started, but ran the point and did it better than good. He paced his team with a game high 20 points and he had a handful of assists from accurate feeds and dump downs to Mesman.
Mesman is a big time football recruit and is considered one of the best TE’s in the state. But don’t let him fool you, the kid can hoop too. Quite simply, Mesman was the biggest and strongest player on the floor and Salem just didn’t have an answer for him. He did a good job using his strength to win position under or near the rim and using his athleticism to finish at the bucket. Mesman finished with 17 points.
Stephens was basically unstoppable in his team’s win against Parma Western. Let’s start with the fact that the young man can score. That much is obvious when seeing his 31 point outbreak. He connected from all over the court, from a catch and shoot corner 3 to a right handed drive that led to free throws. Aspects of his game in addition to scoring were equally as impressive. Stephens was comfortable and effective as a primary ball handler when his team needed it and he hit some teammates with pretty passes as well.
Cabana had a dominant performance in Chelsea’s win. He showed that he could get some very athletic buckets, starting on the wings and driving the lane going right to left or left to right depending on what side of the court he was playing off of. Cabana was also able to finish in transition. His shooting looks like it has improved, with him hitting multiple catch and shoot triples in the game. Cabana finished the contest with 27 points.
Highlights
Dustin Ruiz
Dustin Ruiz
Ruiz was critical to any success that his team saw against Chelsea. Parma Western made a game of it for about a half and had a lot to be proud of and take away from the contest. Ruiz’s shooting was one of those positives. He connected on a couple 3’s that were huge. On a night where Chelsea played terrific disciplined defense and didn’t allow ant easy looks, Western was forced to score with contested jumpers. Ruiz being able to hit a couple timely ones was big.
