I made my annual trip to an open gym at Wayne Memorial to see the talent in the gym. There was a great combination of veteran leaders and exciting young talent. We're going to take a closer look at some of the players who stood out.

There were a lot of good prospects in the gym, so be on the lookout for Part 2 tomorrow!

[player_tooltip player_id='2140999' first='Jeremiah' last='Smith'] flat out looks next level. He has an impressive frame, looking like a wing and a linebacker all wrapped into one. Smith is ready to compete physically at the next level. He's a nice mixture of skills, showing off a nice jumper, a willingness to share the ball, and the strength to bang around the rim. I saw him penetrate the paint, hit 2 feet, and score off 2.

Powers might have made the biggest impression of the day. The gameplay stuff was cool -He could get in the paint off the bounce and either finish or kick. He was a dependable ball handler who used both hands. But it was the off the floor stuff that made him TRULY stand out. Powers was a leader, and you could tell that everyone in the gym respected him. And he was a classy young man that excels in the classroom. Just a very recruitable guard.

Remember I said that there was a mix of veterans and young talent? Here's some of that young talent. RJ Floyd is a name to remember. You don't see a lot of freshmen with his kind of frame and power game. I'd guess 6-5 with the muscle potential to match. And he has some game too! Floyd looked really comfortable with his mid range jumper, hitting multiple from the baseline.

I hate to even give LaVelle a position. He looked maybe 6-4, give or take an inch, and by the eye test, looked like a post player. Well, watching him play at first, the eye test played out. He was strong and could hold his own in the paint with the older players. Then I saw him shoot. Knockdown shooter with confidence. The young man can fill it up. LaVelle could have a very bright future!

How about another high upside freshman in the gym? [player_tooltip player_id='3757695' first='Terrance' last='Wilson'] definitely caught my eye. He was long and athletic and used it well. I really liked Wilson's jumper, and he looked confident with it from the wing and off the bounce.

I made my annual trip to an open gym at Wayne Memorial to see the talent in the gym. There was a great combination of veteran leaders and exciting young talent. We're going to take a closer look at some of the players who stood out.
