Freshman Showcase: High Motor Defenders Who Brought It

The Freshman Showcase gave us another opportunity to evaluate a group of young players who competed with plenty of energy, toughness and purpose. From high motor defenders and relentless rebounders to taking on tough coverage assignments and controlling the floor, several players found different ways to make their presence felt. These are the players who caught our attention and gave us more to watch as their development continues.    Shackleton was one of the more physical interior presences at the showcase, playing with a motor that consistently showed up on the glass and defensively. He battled for position, absorbed contact and used his strong frame to make the paint a difficult place to operate. His length and active arms bothered drivers and forced opponents into tough finishes or altered looks. He also showed good instincts away from the ball, setting solid screens and running the floor hard. Shackleton's toughness and defensive presence made him a difficult matchup throughout the day     Gehringer brought a defensive first mentality to the showcase, consistently making an impact with his effort and attention to detail on that end. He closed out under control, stayed connected to shooters and worked hard to get back in transition to prevent easy scoring opportunities. Offensively he showed quality handles and the ability to keep the offense organized from the point guard spot. Gehringer played with purpose, made steady decisions with the ball and showed the type of two way approach that can make him a valuable piece moving forward     Colborg made his impact through his work rate and willingness to do the dirty work inside. He battled for rebounds on both ends, contested opposing bigs and consistently competed around the basket. Offensively he didn't need to command touches to make an impact, instead taking what the defense gave him and staying active away from the ball. His biggest contributions came on the glass, where he created multiple second chance opportunities for his team and gave possessions extra life. Colborg's physical approach and consistent effort stood out throughout the showcase     Genzlinger made his presence felt as a strong help side defender, consistently showing good timing and instincts around the rim. He did a nice job rotating over from the weak side and was willing to challenge anything that entered the paint. His ability to protect the basket resulted in multiple blocks throughout the showcase, while his activity helped take away scoring opportunities and made opponents think twice about attacking the lane. Genzlinger's defensive awareness and willingness to provide rim protection gave his team a valuable interior presence     Arellano brought a high level motor to the showcase and consistently found ways to impact the game with his effort and defensive awareness. He was active in help, rotated with purpose and kept his hands high to challenge passing lanes and driving angles. His instincts stood out as he recognized when to close out, when to stay home and when to rotate into help. Arellano played with a strong understanding of team defense and rarely seemed out of position. His hustle, communication and defensive IQ made him a steady presence throughout the showcase     Bunch was one of the more noticeable hustle players at the showcase, playing every possession with a high level motor and refusing to let plays die. He competed through contact, chased down loose balls and consistently stayed engaged regardless of where the ball was. His effort was matched by a team first approach, as he made the extra play and did whatever was needed to help his group succeed. Bunch played with real toughness and energy, showing the type of competitive edge that can elevate a team beyond the stat sheet     Donelson showed flashes defensively at the showcase, doing a solid job staying connected to his assignment and working to keep the ball in front. He was active from the perimeter and showed an understanding of where he needed to be within the team defensive structure. While his offensive role was more limited, he found ways to contribute without needing the ball in his hands. His willingness to defend and stay engaged on that end gave him opportunities to impact possessions even when he wasn't involved offensively
