Summer Archetype Series: On-Ball Wizards

There are several different archetypes in basketball—glue guys, defensive anchors, defensive stoppers, table setters—the list goes on. For the rest of July, I'll be highlighting some of the players in New England who fit into those molds quite well. These are guys that are great with the ball in their hands as both scorers and facilitators.    Merritt is literally the definition of a wizards with the basketball. The 6-foot-3 guard simultaneously has a super wide handle (think Allen Iverson-esque) but also controls it quite well and doesn't get the rock taken from him. His change-of-speed and change-of-direction ability is also elite—he effortlessly breezes past defenders with his quick first step and ridiculous skill. He can make shots from the perimeter, is a talented finisher at the hoop, and has the vision you'd want to see out of your primary ball handler. Truthfully, I think Merritt is a high-major D1 player and is probably being underrecruited because of his perceived lack of strength (he's very skinny). His ball-handling ability is different, though, and he has wiry strength that allows him to keep his line on drives. A great season at New Hampton will be huge for Merritt, who's a guy I'm FAR higher on than consensus.     White Jr. has one of the quickest first steps in the region and is a total headache to stay in front of at the point of attack. When he's attacking you downhill in transition, there's very little you can do. He also has a knack for making no-look passes and feeding teammates at angles and speeds that make very little sense and make him a unique facilitator. There are few players more exciting with the ball in their hands in the entire country, and White Jr. will have a chance to get on the scholarship radar with some big time performances at BBN this season or the ability to showcase a quicker and more consistent outside shot.     Flemming has a special handle and knack for getting to his spots in the mid-range. He's a natural born scorer who uses his body, quick handle, and low center of gravity to breeze by defenders before stopping on a dime for middies, which he's quite efficient at. His passing vision also continues to improve as he plays in the NE Elite and Beaver Country Day systems, both of which promote passing the basketball and getting off of it quickly. Flemming is going to be a highly sought after D3 recruit but will have a hard time getting to the next level because of his lack of size. Regardless, things can change with a huge season at Beaver playing alongside other potential scholarship prospects.     Stevens has the ball on a string. He has a knack for dribbling the rock with his head up and always closely examining the floor—where his teammates are cutting from, where the defender's eyes are, and where the help is coming from—and it makes him an elite passer and decision maker. He has a super fundamental dribbling style and always seems in control, and he's never too flashy when it comes to his isolation moves when he needs to create offense. Stevens will probably be a highly sought after D3 player but will have a chance to get some scholarship looks as he'll likely start at the PG position for Choate this coming season.     In my opinion, Urey is one of the most underrated players in the entire region. The 5-foot-10 guard has a phenomenal handle and is a natural born driver. But once he gets into the paint, he makes effortless live-dribble passes and sees the floor like it's in slow motion, which allows him to easily make the right decision consistently. He also makes shots from three and is a way better athlete at the rim than opponents realize. Urey plays for an unknown high school and was on Expressions MHC team this past season, but I think he has major game and can play with some of the best players in the region. Would love to see him get the chance to do so.     Ramos has recently ascended as a result of playing meaningful minutes and providing major production for a Team New England squad that was one of the best teams across the country this spring. He has great change of speed and a special knack for finishing with both hands at the rim, but he also can attack closeouts off the ball and hit shots from three. He just has an all-around skilled game offensively that allows him to produce in a variety of different ways and be effective both with and without the ball in his hands. Ramos came from RI hoops and transitioned quite well to higher level hoops, and that bodes well for his eventual college recruitment.     Bennett is one of the most interesting guards in the entire region. The 6-foot-1 guard is long and wiry, but he has a wonderful handle and a feel for the game well beyond his years. He has a bounce and confidence in the pick and roll—he can get all the way to the rim, make shots from three, or find rollers in the pocket—but he can also play effectively without the ball. Bennett also has budding athleticism at the rim (he gets above the rim for dunks) and is going to look A LOT different in a couple years. Sky is the limit for him.
