NHR State Tournament: Max's Night One Standouts

Seven of the prospects who stood out on night one of the NHR State Tournament at Shakopee High School!    Things got a little close at the end, but Zak helped lead his Select team to an opening round win over Team FSA. His quick first step allowed him to get to blow by defenders out on the perimeter, and get into the lane just about any time he wanted to. From there he could dump it off to one of his bigs, or finish on his own at full speed. True floor stretcher who knocked down a handful of threes, but was also able to utilize shot fakes out on the perimeter to open up driving lanes.     Max looks like a prospect capable of breaking out next winter at East Ridge. At 6'3 he has a size advantage on most guards at the 16u level, and knows how to use it around the rim. From the opening tip Max was looking to get to the basket, driving into the lane and playing off two feet to power his way up to the basket. His game then extended further and further away from the basket where he knocked down a handful of jumpers as defenders started to back off to play the drive. Defensively I thought he did a good job of moving his feet with smaller guards and using his length to make things difficult for them.     Andy continues to show some intriguing flashes at 6'8. Long forward with some mobility that helps him get into positions to make plays as a shot blocker. Throughout the game he came up with 3+ blocks, but altered countless lay-up attempts with his presence alone. He did a great job of walling up and utilizing his length to force miss after miss around the rim. Offensively he showed potential as a pick & pop threat with his soft touch to hit shots from the top of the key.     Another Prior Lake standout from night one, Kobby looks noticeably quicker than he did at this point last year. This has allowed him to get up and down the floor at faster speeds, and he's also comfortable pushing the break on his own. Multiple times Kobby caught on the wing, saw a lane to the rim, and quickly got there with one or two dribbles. Still has that strength that makes him so dangerous out of the low-post as well.     It's good to see Tommy back after missing most of the spring, and he had a nice stretch in the second half to help lead Fury to a big win over Minneapolis Central. He's one of the most physically imposing forwards in the state with his big frame at 6'6-6'7, but he's surprisingly light on his feet. Had a few times where he got downhill to the rim, and was quickly able to change directions to avoid a charge call. A healthy [player_tooltip player_id='2126465' first='Tommy' last='Schabert'] makes this Fury team that much more dangerous.     Bryce was simply getting any shot he wanted against Rise Above. His footwork makes him so tough to stop when isolated on the block, and the high release point with his baby hook allows him to get shots off over length. Bryce handles the ball in a way not many guys can, calmly maneuvering his way to the rim for lay-ups. He's not just a scorer either as Bryce showcased his impressive vision as a passer. He seems to have eyes in the back of his head when operating on the block, meaning you're taking a big risk any time you try to double-team him.     [player_tooltip player_id='2140590' first='Cody' last='Benson'] simply couldn't be stopped from getting to the rim on Friday night. At 6'4 he combines length and athleticism, and with the opposing defense struggling to contain the Titans' frontcourt, it opened up a lot of space for Cody to go to work. Whether he was attacking off the dribble, running his lane in transition, or picking up a steal and going coast-to-coast on his own, Cody just found ways to get to the rim and score. He was a big reason why his team put up 51 first half points in a win.
