While the stars often grab the headlines during championship weekend, every title run is built on the efforts of players who do the little things that don't always show up in the box score. Hustle plays, key defensive stops, timely rebounds, and unselfish minutes all played a major role in shaping the outcomes of the SCHSL State Championship games. These unsung heroes may not have led the scoring column, but their impact was felt in winning moments throughout the weekend. Here's a look at some of the players who quietly helped power their teams on the biggest stage.

[player_tooltip player_id='1537909' first='Jack' last='Mevold'] leads off my list of unsung heroes from the 2025-26 SCHSL State Championships. Jack took part in the first State Championship Game on Thursday afternoon, helping lead Philip Simmons to their first-ever crown. Mevold quietly became one of the most proficient post scorers in the Lowcountry in his junior season, and it was something the Iron Horses counted on often. He isn't a dominant rebounder or shot-blocker because of a lack of athleticism, but he is excellent positionally and makes up for his deficiencies with textbook fundamentals. Jack had to navigate some early foul trouble, but when he did, his team was simply better when he was on the floor. Look for him to build on a successful high school season with a standout AAU season for [program_tooltip program_id='2842739' first='843' last='Tough'].

Another interior player who made his presence felt despite not being a household name is AJ. Veal is one of a couple of two-sport athletes in this list, and he definitely looks like it in his 6'4", 220-pound frame. He is never going to lead the Redhawks in scoring, but he is going to be someone they can count on to fill his role and be active when he's on the floor. AJ was on the floor late on Thursday night, and he stepped up with back-to-back crucial baskets to take the lead from 6 points to 11. These both came off dump-off passes from his excellent Point Guard, one of them being an and-one, which ignited the Westwood crowd with energy. Veal has been an unsung hero for this team all year long, but there is no doubting his impact in crunch time of the school's first-ever State Championship.

Christ Church had one of the iconic moments in South Carolina State Championship history, thanks to David Dixon's game-winner. Reid played a crucial role in the all-important play. He missed the two free throws that allowed Fox Creek to tie the game, but he didn't sulk and came down to provide the assist on Dixon's right-corner three. Hipp also stepped up throughout the game, with his big frame being necessary to stop some of Fox Creek's interior threats. Offensively, he had 9 points in a very low-scoring game, again being a factor close to the rim because of his combination of size and strength. Many will remember the shot, but without Reid, Christ Church might not have been the ones celebrating in Colonial Life Arena.

[player_tooltip player_id='3549127' first='Jourdin' last='Mack'] is one of the only three unranked players on a loaded Ridge View roster, but he is often one of the first Coach Staley turns to off the bench. Why is that? It's because Jourdin doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective. He is your typical, scrappy, undersized, two-sport athlete who is active off the ball, fights for loose balls, and can defend bigger matchups. Mack stepped up off the bench with four first-quarter points, simply because he wasn't someone Ashley Ridge game-planed for. Jourdin will likely be a college football player after his time at Ridge View is over, holding offers from Savannah State, Presbyterian, and Allen, but he certainly fits the description of an unsung hero in his two basketball State Championship runs.

Javarious is easily one of the most impactful transfers across the entire state. After coming over from Blythewood High School, he hit the ground running with elite play amongst a loaded backcourt. He doesn't have as many of the highlight-reel plays above the rim as his teammates do, but when it's time to make a play in the half-court, Wyche is often the guy they trust. This is because he is calm under pressure and through contact, both as a scorer and a facilitator. His positional size and basketball IQ are factors for this, and they are also big reasons why I think he can be a great player at the next level. Javarious has been an under-the-radar player playing in Class 1A all season long, but his 24-point, 4-steal, and 2-assist performance in Saturday's State Championship is another in a long line of big performances on bright stages.

Rounding out the list of unsung heroes from State Championship Weekend in Columbia is [player_tooltip player_id='1206192' first='Quh'mareon' last='Webb']. Webb fits this category less so because of his game-to-game success, but more so because of his personality in relation to the rest of his team. Quh'mareon is more of a quiet, consistent presence for this Yellow Jacket team. He's not a guy who will be loud and intense, but he just goes about his business each and every game. That was exactly the case in the 4A State Championship Game, as he went for a team-high 21 points along with some crucial defensive effort. Webb was also the guy who sealed it with a breakaway dunk, where he let out as much emotion as you will see from him as the Yellow Jackets won their first-ever State Championship.
