MPSSAA 4A Playoff Recap: Guard Masterclass

The MPSSAA State Championship brought out some of the best individual performances of the season with multiple players stepping up in the biggest of moments! The 4A bracket was loaded with premier play from multiple positions and schools. This article will feature a detailed look at a list of guards through each class that put on a show in their respective MPSSAA runs.    Armani once again proved his worth at a relentless offensive weapon who consistently attacked and applied pressure on the defense. Played with energy and confidence in every game leading to Blake's State Championship. Armani got downhill aggressively and constantly drew fouls, never allowing the defense to settle. He also impacted the game defensively forcing a lot of turnovers. In clutch moments he was able to deliver each time his opportunity came.     Boogie showed resilience and shot-making ability, staying aggressive even when his shot wasn't falling early. He created offense both by getting to the line and making plays in transition, including some finishes off a smooth tangent of double moves against Kennedy in their classic OT battle. As the game progressed, he found his rhythm, knocking down multiple threes and scoring from his spots with confidence helping rally his team. He also showed his ability to create off the dribble, sinking multiple 3pt shots after shaking the defense with the handle. Showed why he is always amongst the conference-leaders in scoring.     Malachi stood out to me as a skilled combo guard that can make plays off the bounce or from spotting up along the perimeter. He has enough speed to get downhill quickly and combine his strength and touch to finish at the basket. Liked the way Malachi shot the ball at a high clip from beyond the arc through Seneca Valley's MPSSAA run. Malachi made timely reads when the defense collapsed, creating for others before relocating efficiently and drilling the spot up triple. When the offense stalled, he stepped up by attacking the defense and drawing fouls. His ability to score at all levels and respond in key moments made him an interesting prospect to watch in the upcoming senior class.     Dyvae made a strong impact with his defensive activity and efficient offensive production. Dyvae consistently created turnovers with his quick hands and high IQ, nabbing multiple steals both on-ball and in passing lanes. He showed patience in the paint, finishing efficiently and embracing contact. Started to really make his mark as an efficient two-way guard through GTJ's playoff run. His ability to disrupt plays defensively and convert offensive opportunities made him a constant threat in the 4A class as GTJ advanced through the postseason.     Paul was a confident shot creator who showed a polished scoring package throughout the playoffs for Blair. He knocked down multiple threes and continued to score effectively from different areas on the floor. Liked the way Paul consistently attacked the defense to get to his spots and it helped him draw a lot of fouls. Paul showed comfort taking tough shots and was able to convert often. Paul's performance over the course of the Blair's MPSSAA run helped him really showcase his scoring prowess and confidence as a guard.     Joseph was a clutch shot-maker for RM in their 4A MPSSAA appearance. Consistently delivered from beyond the arc in key moments. He showed confidence and composure as a perimeter scorer, knocking down timely threes including a huge shots late in the 4th quarter and in overtime. He also impacted the game defensively, applying pressure on the ball and creating steals. His ability to produce from deep while contributing on both ends helped prove he can be a very reliable two-way guard night-in and night-out.     Gabe showed toughness and confidence as a scorer, bouncing back from a slow start to make a major impact late in the game I caught from him. He stayed composed, took quality shots, and found his rhythm in the second half thanks to his efficiency. Gabe attacked the basket with purpose and looked for opportunities to get himself going. His confidence never wavered, and it paid off in the biggest moment as he knocked down the game-winning three in overtime to secure a 4A MPSSAA Regional Championship for JFK.     Obi is a steady perimeter scorer that likes to set the tone with his shooting and defense. Liked the way Obi kept the pace and kept his composure against defensive pressure. Obi made smart reads with the ball and mixed in drives that drew fouls, keeping defenders off balance. He also contributed defensively by forcing turnovers in the backcourt. His ability to step up and provide consistent scoring made him a key piece in his team's run that fell just short in the MPSSAA Semifinals.     I enjoyed seeing Carter operate with the ball during Walter Johnson's postseason stint. He showed as a dynamic shot creator and carried a major offensive load for his team. Carter showed deep range and confidence from beyond the arc, knocking down multiple tough three-pointers with step-back moves and quick pull-ups. He scored at all three levels, mixing perimeter shot-making with tough layup finishes inside. Carter created separation with his handle and used changes of pace to get into the lane. Really flashed his true potential in this year's playoff run.     Kyrin was a steady offensive presence for GTJ and made timely plays throughout the postseason. He showed a strong feel for spacing and knew how to get himself into scoring position. He balanced his scoring well, knocking down open shots while also attacking when defenders overcommitted. Kyrin made a strong impact defensively, helping force turnovers and turned them into fast break opportunities often. Really impressed with Kyrin's strong feel and sense for the game as a Freshmen. Definitely a name to keep tabs on in the future.
