New readers: Use code Proia30

The Gonzaga DC Classic is perennially a great event at the outset of the season to see high-level teams from the DMV compete against good groups from out of the area. This year was no different, with teams from 5 different states across the country competing in a survive-and-advance bracket tournament. In this article we will break down some of the best guards that I saw on Friday, let's dive in!

14p 4a 2r 2s 5/7 FG 1/2 3P 3/4 FT vs SJP

-Edwards started the game with several successful drives to the rim, was throwing lobs in transition to his bigs, drawing 2 and finding teammates in the halfcourt, and taking care of the rock. Loved the pace and confidence that he played with, especially in the 2Q, as he is starting to pick his spots in a pretty deep but young backcourt for Coach Blue and co. Edwards saved his best for last with a huge middle drive and lob to the big, then a baseline floater that went through the net late in the game to seal the win and advance to the next round in the Gonzaga Classic.

18p 7a 5r 1s 1b 5/9 FG 4/6 3P 4/4 FT vs StA

-Lundy is beginning to find his way in a very deep backcourt room for the Vikings. He started things off with a well-timed backdoor cut for the lay, hit a corner 3 off the catch, executed a beautiful 1-handed bounce pass with some zip on it from halfcourt to an open big under the rim, and was especially dynamic in transition. Loved the drive n kick wave of plays in the 2Q and beginning of the 3Q to push his team out to big leads. His ability to switch ends of the floor quickly with the ball in his hands should be huge for a young but balanced Wood roster this season as they look to make a splash in the PCL.

10p 5r 1a 4b 5s vs Gonzaga

-Liked the grit and defensive effort from Shackleford as he works his way back from injury. Most prospects that have a rough game offensively will let that affect their defensive effort, but he almost finish with a double-double when you combine points and stocks. Shackleford was really active defensively blocking shots on and off the ball while jumping passing lanes to push the pace in transition. Offensively the jumper was just a tad off but he made up for it with drives to the rim before finishing with either hand around the rim. Shackleford is also beginning to see some of the crosscourt skip reads and execute those passes through tight windows-- the jump shots were just not falling tonight. With so many new pieces to work in, this Tech Prep team should look totally different in the spring.

6a 2s 1r vs Tech Prep

-Peterson waited for his opportunity and is capitalizing as a heady point guard prospect that is getting two feet in the paint and making the right play for Coach Urgo. Peterson had four assists and a steal before even taking a shot in the game, showing the unselfish leadership that this team will need this season in a rebuilding year for the Purple Eagles. Loved seeing him cut off ballhandlers' path to the rim to force them to change direction or kick out to a teammate. Being able to play ball-hawking on-ball and off-ball defense should be extra valuable this season.

13p 7r 2a 3s vs Wood

-Continue to come away impressed with the feel from Wingfield in a 4-guard lineup that allows the Lions to take turns spreading the floor. Wingfield was especially good on the glass, securing defensive stops before pushing the pace in transition to try and find some easy buckets for his team. Wingfield scored off a beautiful reverse lay, curled around a screen for an elbow J, hit a movement 3, and got downhill in the 2H to score at the rim or earn trips to the FT line.

9p 3r 1a 3s 2/3 FG 4/4 FT vs Tech Prep

-Liked the flashes that I saw from Higganbotham as a southpaw lead guard that can be successful both on or off the ball. He brings the toughness from the football field onto the hardwood as a PG prospect that is more physical than he looks, absorbing and dishing out contact on drives to the rim to bully his matchup off their spots. He's especially adept in quick reads in tight gaps, thriving in chaos in ways that most freshman would shy away from. 9 points on 3 shots, playing limited minutes in a blowout win was a great first impression as he starts out his HS career.
