With the debut of our first ever Virginia 2028 class rankings last month, we'll take a deep dive into some of the players and their strengths now as we continue to watch them develop. Here's a look at some of the top mismatches in the sophomore class in VA.

[player_tooltip player_id='2548185' first='Kelvin' last='Anderson'] | 6'2” CG | Petersburg (#3 Overall)

Anderson transfers to Petersburg after a very good freshman season at Catholic last year, and the reason he's considered a mismatch is a little different than others, and it's because of his mix of strength and shot making ability as a guard. He's very good at posting up smaller guards and he can hit fall-aways or use his strength to bully his way to the rim, he is shifty off the bounce with good counters and good footwork to create space, and he can use his strength defensively to guard multiple positions as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2882025' first='Khyair' last='Phillips'] | 6'4” SG | Bishop Ireton (#14 Overall)

Phillips has been a prospect that many in the DMV have been raving about since he was in middle school, and after an up-and-down freshman year he's starting to come into his own this summer and is very intriguing with his skillset and athleticism at his size. He can knock it down from deep with a quick release and good form, he can attack off the bounce and has great size and athleticism to finish over shot blockers at the rim, and he has the ability to guard multiple positions on the defensive end too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2918915' first='Aiden' last='Friend'] | 6'3” SG | St. Stephen's St. Agnes (#19 Overall)

Friend had a great summer with SSSAS in the Capitol Hoops Summer League and the DMV Live periods, and he is a player I think could be a matchup nightmare if he continues to grow and fill out moving forward. Right now he's a very good shooter from deep who can get hot quickly and knock down shots in succession, he can put it on the deck and get to spots to make shots, but if he ends up getting to 6'5” or 6'6” he will be a player who can also get downhill to play above the rim and use his size to finish in traffic too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2918930' first='Jamail' last='Trahan'] | 6'5” PF | Granby (#22 Overall)

Trahan is a very intriguing prospect moving forward, as he's already 6'5” and likely still growing, but he also is an inside-out threat who can use his strength in the paint and also use his perimeter skillset to make shots and make plays off the bounce. He's a big time athlete who already plays above the rim effortlessly in transition and when he gets downhill, he hits the glass hard and can get extra opportunities on the offensive end, and he can work out of the post both with his back to the basket and in face up scenarios too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2918960' first='Malachi' last='Lee'] | 6'1” PG | Westfield (#32 Overall)

Lee's future isn't in basketball most likely as he's already being recruited on the football field as a highly touted wide receiver, but that athleticism and toughness lends itself to his mismatch abilities on the basketball court. He's a guard by trait with the ability to push in transition and get to the rim in isolation situations, he can knock down shots and guards the ball well, but he's also able to switch and guard int he paint, and he's a fantastic rebounder for his size as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2919030' first='Dillon' last='Murphy'] | 6'4” F | TPLS (#43 Overall)

Murphy impressed this summer with his VA Havoc group as a 6'4” hybrid forward who is likely still growing, and what makes him a mismatch is that he is an absolute sniper from deep. I watched him knock down multiple catch-and-shoot shots on kick-outs and swings, then watched him go through on a baseline cut and set his feet and knock it down on the move, then afterwards attack the closeout and get to the rim to finish. He's a player I need to watch more, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him grow a couple of inches over the next few years and end up as a stretch hybrid four man in the new sense.
