I attended Newman School's open gym on Tuesday, September 9th, to check out some players who will play for both their A and B teams. The reigning NEPSAC AAA champions have certainly lost some firepower, but they come back with a loaded group that's ready to defend their title. Their B team also has some intriguing D3 players.

Below are 5 honorable mentions who also stood out.

Maloney didn't have his best day on Tuesday, but the potential is through the roof. When I first saw him a year ago, he was skinnier, a little less athletic, and not the most consistent shooter. He has gotten a lot bigger/stronger and more athletic, and he has also improved his shot release and consistency from three. Now, the 6-foot-6 wing is a really intriguing player who can do a lot of different things on the court. Once he gets a little more comfortable handling the ball, the junior will have scholarship schools interested in him. Keep an eye on Maloney, who should improve a lot with Newman this season.

Narasimhan's superpower is his shooting ability, and it makes him a really effective and unique player. The 6-foot-5 wing is a phenomenal off ball mover -- he understands when to back cut and slip versus when to curl and flare -- and he does a great job getting his shot off quickly once the ball comes to him. With his combination of size and a quick release, he brings a lot as a movement shooter. He needs to improve his ball handling and athleticism if he wants to play scholarship hoops, but he should be a relatively high level D3 player after a good season at Newman this year.

Tuesday was my first time ever seeing Abelard in person and I was wildly impressed with his on-ball defense. He consistently locked up opposing ball handlers (many of whom will play D1 college hoops) by quickly sliding his feet and using his long wingspan to poke at the ball. He also did an amazing job on the offensive and defensive glass; his hands are like a magnet for loose balls and his motor is quite special. He won't be a scorer for Newman, but he should be able to provide some really solid on-ball defense and can perhaps be a bigger star for their B team.

I didn't notice Mathey early on, but it was impossible to miss his impressive shooting display towards the conclusion of Tuesday's open gym. The 6-foot-4 wing is definitely skinny in the upper body, but he has a super quick shot release and comes off of screens like an elite movement shooter. He probably made about 5 threes in the span of the last 20 minutes of game time, and all of them were swishes, even though his release looks interesting. I didn't see too much off the dribble skills, but I'm sure he has some that he'll show off on the Newman B team this season. Could also be blooming late physically.

Smith comes from Tallahassee and brings solid floor general and point guard abilities. The junior is only 5-foot-11, but he handles the ball very well and is always scanning the floor for cutters and movers. He also has basketball in his blood -- his pops hooped at Morgan State and is a coach at BC. Despite his shot looking a bit unique, he gets good elevation off the ground and makes shots at a fairly consistent clip. I would imagine he'll be a role player off the bench on the Newman squad this season and will probably get some more college looks as a result of being in New England.
