Owing to his late hire and newness to the region. New Ferris St head coach Bobby Pietrack held the championship program first elite camp of the spring/summer this past weekend.

A solid 45 player turnout provided plenty of high level competition. Following are the standouts from the 2026 class that caught my eye.

[player_tooltip player_id='1806395' first='Kyle' last='Brown'] 6-3 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern Brown showed the versatility that should find him a home somewhere at the next level. Has long been an advanced scorer and shooter. Showed improved ball handling on Sunday. Also appears to have a little more physicality in the past year. With a thicker upper body and the ability to finish above the rim. If he can continue to refine the ball handling skillset further. Could really broaden his recruiting window. There is fine line between being labeled a “tweener”. As opposed to a true combo guard. He is closer to the latter at the moment and continues to improve. Should form a strong Huskie backcourt with fellow camp participant 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2140476' first='Cameron' last='Crowder'] in the upcoming year.

[player_tooltip player_id='2112227' first='Amari' last='Lewis'] 6-5 Portage Northern Lewis' strong play has been like clockwork this spring and summer. The lanky lefty puts constant pressure on the rim on penetration. The penetration has been aided by improved ball handling in the past year. Is an electric finisher, especially in transition. Also shows good elevation on a traditional jump shot that is hard to block. Operates well in the mid range. Is very skinny and will need to add weight yo take his game to the next level. I don't foresee that being a problem. Should form a dynamic duo with fellow camp participant [player_tooltip player_id='1588220' first='Quinton' last='Swanson'] (6-5) who also played well on Sunday.

[player_tooltip player_id='2873553' first='Ajak' last='Gieu'] 6-0 Grand Rapids Christian Gieu had a solid all around day. However really popped late during the five-five scrimmages. Came alive offensively, scoring in a wide variety of ways. Attacked the rim fearlessly despite not being very big. Has a very slender frame. However plays with a surprising level of strength. Not quite an above the rim finisher. That being said, gets off the ground very quickly and showed some creative finishing angles at the rim. If continues to play how he did Sunday. Christian could feature one of the better backcourts in the state. As fellow camp participant 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2140474' first='Braylon' last='Taylor'] was also outstanding on Sunday. While 2026 [player_tooltip player_id='2217997' first='Carl' last='Thompson'] finished off one the best grassroots campaigns of any player in the state. The Eagles look to be gearing for a big year with fellow GLIAC commit [player_tooltip player_id='2112202' first='Connor' last='Johnson'] (Northern Michigan) in tow as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2932338' first='Anthony' last='Richardson'] 6-5 Grandville This lanky wing put a strong period on what was a true breakout spring. I'll be honest, I had never heard of Richardson before June. After a strong grassroots run with West Michigan Premier, that is no longer the case. Passes the eye in a major way. Has the type of frame that was born to play basketball. Has easy and smooth elevation at the rim. Also showed good footwork and doesn't need much room for takeoff. Is a pretty late bloomer and still looks to have a little bit to go. However the developmental arrow is pointed up in a major way.

[player_tooltip player_id='1805262' first='Caleb' last='Claerbaut'] 6-7 Zeeland East With a set of brothers who have played in the program (one still currently) Claerbaut made himself right at home. Shot the ball extremely well from beyond the arc. Ordered his feet well and had a quick release. Fits the prototype of the modern stretch 4/5. Especially at the small college level. He can raise that level with an increased physicality. Defensively shows adequate lateral quickness and foot work. Was able to stay with the camp's cadre of small point on high pick and rolls. Will need to add more weight to hold up down low. Already has the length and defensive timing to be a rim protector.
