It was great to see so many college coaches watch Nevada players.

It was also an eye opening event for myself, as I got to take a much closer look at how these 5A teams are shaping up.

Below are recaps on Bishop Gorman, Coronado, and Mojave.

Bishop Gorman - Bishop Gorman went 2-2 at Section 7. They started off with an overtime win over La Mirada thanks to [player_tooltip player_id='2370259' first='Terry' last='McKinney III'] hitting a free throw with just seconds remaining. Unfortunately they lost their next two games to Sunnyslope (AZ) and Mater Dei (CA). However both games were fairly tight. The Gaels then finished up Section 7 with a quality win over Basha. Considering that they had the toughest slate of any team, they played pretty well. Their starters were [player_tooltip player_id='2086139' first='Tyler' last='Johnson'], [player_tooltip player_id='2047786' first='Kameron' last='Cooper'], Dino Roberts, [player_tooltip player_id='2370259' first='Terry' last='McKinney III'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1266706' first='Tyler' last='Bright']. After seeing them play together in person, there's no denying that they are an incredibly skilled and talented group. Then they also have a loaded bench, and there's multiple guys like Fred Jones Jr. "Deuce", [player_tooltip player_id='1965271' first='Hudson' last='Dannels'] Canon Mullen (new transfer) , and [player_tooltip player_id='2450360' first='Noah' last='Grossman'] who can come in and get a bucket. At the moment they still look like the top dogs to me, and every 5A team will have their work cut out for them this upcoming season.

Coronado - It was Coronnado's first real tournament with their new transfers: [player_tooltip player_id='1490283' first='Amare' last='Oba'], Siyahe Siasiai, [player_tooltip player_id='1707488' first='Demari' last='Hunter'], [player_tooltip player_id='1667941' first='Alan' last='Anderson Jr']. and [player_tooltip player_id='2484289' first='Devaughn' last='Dorrough']. Their first matchup was against a very athletic Rendondo Union team and they lost 76-37. Then in their next game they played Dublin (CA) and won by a convincing 15 points. Game 3 was against Pasadena, who beat them 64-46. The Cougars then finished their weekend on a high note, and beat Rancho Christian, 65-61. From what I saw, they are loaded with size and explosive players. Now it will just be a matter of coming together as a team and sharing the rock. In order for them to take down other 5A teams next season, they'll also need to use their 6'6+ players to their advantage. Especially on defense and on the glass. If they can turn into a defensive-minded team that outrebounds other teams, they'll win a ton of games. And I also expect they'll be a squad that can get out in transition frequently once they build more chemistry.

Mojave - It was a bit of an up and down weekend for the Mojave Rattlers at Section 7. They lost first game was against Crean Lutheran who had multiple future D1 players on their team. Including a pair of 7 footers who dominated the boards and a shooter (Hunter Caplan) who drew college coaches attention in every game that he played. They then dropped their second game in a row when they lost to Lincoln (CA) 74-59. Despite the losses, the Rattlers bounced back and won games 3 and 4. In game 3 they beat Arcadia (CA) 75-72. Although Arcadia played with good pace, Mojave made more plays and took better care of the rock. Then in game 4, Mojave had their best outing of the weekend and they were clicking on all cylinders. Transfer, Ty'Jir Broxie, went off for 28 points and 14 rebounds. I also liked how [player_tooltip player_id='1638995' first='Aries' last='Denson'], [player_tooltip player_id='1668933' first='Phil' last='Gordon'], Jayden Luna and [player_tooltip player_id='1465681' first='Curtis' last='Coleman'] played. Each of them were making smart decisions with the ball, and everyone ate. Now that they have Broxie in the mix, I think Mojave has a much better shot at contending for state next season. His size is something that a few other 5A teams simply don't have. When you pair that with their athleticism, and shooting, they're a difficult team to guard.
