This week I’ll be putting out season recap articles. I went to 45 games this past season and covered basketball in the Columbus and Toledo areas. This article will be talking about the tier 2 sophomore I saw this year.
Kowalczyk’s big breakout season was something that was not surprising to anyone who watched his AAU season last year. He continued that momentum into his high school season. He took on a much bigger role this year for the Titans and excelled. He brought the ability to play inside and out for the Titans. He could be their big guy but be able to play on the wing. He is very skilled and athleticism is coming into the mix for him nicely. He is dunking the ball off vertical easily. He will start to learn how to use all of his tools the older he gets. Once he does that it will be tough to contain him.
McKinney can change the momentum of the game on the defensive end. His length and athleticism are the greatest tools he has. He can guard and will guard multiple positions. He plays the game with great effort. He displays this on the defensive end. For a guard, he has an elite level of stealing and blocking ability. He is not an attack-first player for Reynoldsburg because that is not his role but he can go off any night for 20 points. He gets to the rim well and takes smart shots. This allows him to score very efficiently. In one game I was at this year, he came in for the Raiders and completely changed the dynamic of the game on both ends.
Highlights
Calloway has an immense amount of skill. He plays the game the right way and is really shifty. He runs the show for a very young but greatly talented Bishop Hartley squad. He does a great job of changing his speed. It was so smooth to watch him do it. He explodes. He attacks defenders’ top foot and gets them off balance as well as anyone. He is someone you do not want to get caught on an island with. He will get past you and do whatever he wants. He finishes the ball at a high level against bigger players.
Davis showed a ton of growth this year not as much with his skillset but with confidence and just taken a step up in his role. He became a better defender, rebounder, and shooter along with some other small skills that made his impact on winning larger than last season. He has gotten more athletic and can see that with his effortless bounce and ability to float to the rim. He is stronger and finishes through contact well. His shot is smooth as ever. He can guard any top guard in the state due to his length. He is just a winner.
Highlights
Johnson has a great amount of potential. He has a nice set of skills with some insane length. He looks to be able to get some more inches in height and this will allow him to be a perfect size off-ball guard at the next level. His athletic ability will develop more and more. I watched him play in one of the last games this season and he won the game for his team. He can lock down on defense when he turns it up. I would love to see more consistency on that end but he can be elite. He can score from every level.
