Continue ReadingCourtney was great in two viewings last week, averaging 20 points on a combined 17-23 shooting (4-6 3P), 5.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 3.5 steals in wins over 4A #2 Iowa City West and 2A #2 Hudson. The only knock on Courtney last week was poor free-throw shooting (2-10 in the two games combined), but his full offensive arsenal was on display. Against West, he was 11-15 from the floor en route to 26 points, completely dominating the game as a scorer by getting to his mid-range jumper off the dribble, and using his size, athleticism, and physicality to carve out a tiny bit of space to get to his shot, and then elevate above the defense. Against Hudson, he played more of a facilitator role, finishing with 14 points on 6-8 shooting to go with 10 assists. He sees the floor really well and is great at driving and getting the defense to collapse, then finding open cutters or shooters for easy looks. A really strong week for the 6-2 senior guard.
In two viewings last week, Bean averaged 17.5 points on 14-21 shooting (2-7 3P), 9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and a steal in wins over Iowa City West and Hudson. His work on the glass in both games, coming from his point guard position, is of note. He’s a physical guard who makes strong contact on his box outs, and he has a nose for the ball, attacking the high point and pulling down boards routinely. Against Hudson, he pulled down 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. A talented passer who sees the floor well, he’s in complete command of the game when he has the ball in his hands. He’s a capable perimeter shooter who shoots it equally well off the dribble and the catch, but he’s at his best when he’s using his change of pace, ball-handling, and strength to play downhill and get to the rim.
Highlights
Koch has firmly established himself as one of the best catch-and-shoot weapons in the state’s 2024 class. He moves extremely well without the ball in his hands, has a quick release off the catch with extended range, and he has his feet squared and ready to fire when he catches a pass. He’s a good enough ball-handler and passer to play the point, but he’s at his best when he’s operating without the ball in his hands, using off-ball screens to get additional space, and burning teams from the arc. He has quick hands and moves his feet well on the defensive end of the floor as well. He finished with 12 points on 4-7 3P shooting and 3 steals in West’s loss to Kennedy.
Highlights
Stevens came off the bench to provide a spark for the Trojans in their loss to Kennedy, finishing with 10 points on 3-7 shooting (2-5 3P), 3 assists, and a steal. A quick guard with great handles, he can create off the dribble for himself and his teammates, as well as knock down shots off the catch.
A lightning quick guard who puts constant pressure on opposing teams on both ends of the floor with his IQ and speed, McCain had 15 points on 6-14 shooting (1-2 3P, 2-2 FT), 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in the Vikings’ comeback win over Waverly-Shell Rock on Friday night. He handles the ball really well and is able to get to the rim going either direction. He shoots it well from the mid-range and while he doesn’t look to shoot it from 3 often, he is a good perimeter shooter as well. An athletic guard who will compete on the glass, he also is a solid defender, especially on the ball.
An efficient shooter with great size, length, and shooting prowess on the perimeter, Bockman is a really intriguing prospect who may be looking to go the JuCo route before making a decision on the next level. He has a pure stroke from deep and moves really well without the ball in his hands, but the aspect of his game that shone the brightest in Decorah’s win at WSR was his passing and court vision, showing increased confidence in his ball-handling and shot creation, not only for himself but his teammates as well. He had 15 points on 5-12 shooting (3-7 3P, 2-2 FT), 5 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Highlights
Ramker got out of the gates quick against Decorah, scoring 10 points in the first quarter, including a pair of deep 3s in which he showcased a lightning-quick release on his jumper. He’s a quick guard who can get by defenders and get to the rim, and he’s really good at seeing the floor, getting the defense to collapse in on him, and then finding an open shooter or cutter. He had 12 points on 4-7 shooting (2-3 3P, 2-2 FT), 2 rebounds, and 9 assists in the loss to the Vikings.
A 6-1/6-2 sharpshooting wing, Frazell is another Go-Hawk with a quick release off the catch, unlimited range, and great off-ball movement that he uses to free himself up to get to his shot. He’s a pure shooter who gets great rotation and elevation on his jumper, making it difficult to contest. He competes on the glass on both ends of the floor and is a good enough ball-handler to lead the break after pulling down a defensive board. He had 21 points on 7-14 shooting (4-8 3P, 3-3 FT) and 6 rebounds in the Go-Hawks loss to Decorah.
Highlights
A physical power wing with a tremendous frame, Marsh will play college football at Iowa, but he’s a darn good basketball player as well. At 6-4, he has good size and great strength that he uses to control the painted area when he’s getting to the rim, or walling up defensively. He’s a good ball-handler and passer who sees the floor really well, and he’s a force on the glass on both ends of the floor who can lead the break after pulling down a defensive board. He has a pure stroke, getting good elevation on his jumper and he has range well beyond the high school line. He finished with 15 points on 4-10 shooting (4-7 3P, 3-4 FT) to go with 7 rebounds and 5 assists against Decorah.
Davis held his own against Kennedy’s size, length and athleticism, finishing with 10 points and 8 rebounds in the Pirates’ loss to the top-ranked team in the state. A mobile, active 6-4/6-5 forward who does a majority of his damage around the rim, he has soft hands, good footwork and touch around the rim, and a few go-to moves as well as counter moves. His strong free-throw shooting shows some potential to add some range to his game as he moves to the next level as well.
Highlights
Michael had a solid game against Kennedy, scoring 15 points on 5-11 shooting (3-5 3P, 2-2 FT) with 4 rebounds and an assist. A quick guard with a high IQ, he doesn’t force anything and is able to get to his spots off the dribble. He’s a good shooter off the bounce who gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly, elevating into his jumper, and he has a pure stroke from deep. In most Hudson games, he’s a bit more of a facilitator than a scorer first, but against the best team in the state, the Pirates needed him to be assertive as a scorer and he was solid in that regard. He’s a smart guard who can play with or without the ball in his hands and will help a D3 program.
