Continue ReadingA long 6-1 wing who impacts the game in a number of ways, Schauf had a really solid all-around floor game in the Panthers’ win over Cascade last week, finishing with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. He uses his length effectively on the defensive end, contesting shots on the perimeter and getting into passing lanes, and he’s a reliable shooting threat from the arc with a pure release and good form on his jumper. He can create a bit off the dribble, sees the floor well, and is active on the glass on both ends of the floor.
Another solid all-around player for the Panthers, Gogel chipped in 5 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in their win over Cascade. The form on his jumper is a little funky, but it works for him and he has range well beyond the high school line. He sees the floor well and keeps the ball moving on the offensive end while also contributing as a defender and rebounder.
Hoffman got off to a strong start in the Cougars’ loss to Monticello and then struggled with his shot a bit in the second half, but his emergence as a secondary scorer will be huge for Cascade alongside star wing Jackson Lieurance Jackson Lieurance 6’2″ | SG Cascade | 2025 State IA . Hoffman is good at creating looks for himself off the dribble, has a really good mid-range game, and is a capable perimeter shooting threat as well. He uses his length effectively on the defensive end, getting up into passing lanes and turning defense into offense.

Jirak is one of two really good freshmen at Wilton making an early impact for the Beavers. A 6-2 off-ball guard, he moves really well without the ball in his hands, and his constant activity makes defending him a bit of a nightmare. He shoots it well off the catch, can create for himself off the dribble a bit, and he runs the floor hard in transition for easy looks. He can provide some versatility on the defensive end with his combination of length and quickness as well. He had 18 points on 8-17 shooting (2-5 3P) with 2 steals in Wilton’s win over Iowa Valley.

Putman is the other impact Wilton freshman, and he has been sensational for the Beavers early this season. He burst onto the scene with a 40-bomb in his varsity debut and he hasn’t really slowed down since. A well-built 6-4/6-5 wing, he’s able to get to the bucket routinely and he already has a fairly developed frame (for a freshman), allowing him to absorb contact and finish at the rim. He has a good mid-range game, creates well for himself and his teammates, and is a fantastic rebounder and active defender. He had 13 points on 6-12 shooting, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals, and 3 blocks in their win over Iowa Valley, showcasing his all-around stat-sheet stuffing ability.
Michael Montgomery
Michael Montgomery
Speaking of well-built frames, Montgomery is a physically imposing force in the paint for West Branch who looks more like a college sophomore than a high school one. He’s 6-4, strong, mobile, and has soft hands that he uses to control the glass, especially on the defensive end. I don’t know a lot about football scouting, but he has every bit the look of a future left tackle at the college level. He takes a bit of a backseat for the Bears currently as they have a pair of really, really good seniors leading the way, but Montgomery plays his role well and buys into what the team needs from him. He’s a solid player.
