After a spring and summer against 17U competition, Young is playing with his age group this weekend. In a viewing this afternoon, the game came easy to him. His driving was his customary balance of finesse and strength. And what was especially impressive was his shooting from beyond the arc. He took more in rhythm and clean looks. Once he got it going from distance and his confidence was flowing, he successfully pump faked a closing out defender, took a small step and buried another tough triple.

The crafty and quick guard was a handful off the bounce in the second half of a huge victory for his 15U squad. His quick first step often allowed him to get downhill, often leaning on a spin move that left defenders in the dust. Then his combination of body control and long arms, allowed to consistently finish with flair and efficiently at the rim. Hopkins is shaping up to a be shifty and fluid driver with a fancy finishing package.
Injuries thrusted Kelly into a bigger role and he shined. The sharpshooter hit big threes in both contests for Team Griffin ‘s 16U squad. But it was more than just floor spacing and timely shooting. Kelly is also very timely when it comes to positioning on defense. He popped up for steals, deflections, and especially charges. In the first game alone, he drew at least four fouls by being in the right place at the right time. The winning culture that Kelly is apart at Dale continues to shine through.
It’s been a huge spring and summer for the throwback center prospect, and he continued his game changing play in Dallas. During a second half rally, Madrid anchored the paint on the defensive end with blocks and shots contests. While on offense, his continuing improvement of his conditioning was displayed with a pair of rim rattling slams. The momentum continues to build for Madrid, as Oklahoma Baptist offered last week and now looks the part of a potential D1 prospect for programs wanting an old fashion space eater at the 5.
Highlights
The man at the controls of his squad’s free wheeling, long range bombing offense didn’t disappoint today. In an evening victory he was on fire from distance, pulling comfortably from a few feet beyond the arc. And looking more comfortable with handling closeouts and needing less space to take shots. Along with his elite shooting, Furnish continued to be a high level passer and creator. From simple drive and kicks, tight window bounce passes and impressive one handed cross court passes; the Crossings Knight sat the table for his teammates with his head on a swivel.
