The future UCO Broncho finally got it going from distance in Dale’s Friday win over Wilson. Went 4-7 in that win for the Pirates. He’s been a key part of this historic Dale run over the last four years, as a timely sharpshooter. But injuries hampered the end of his junior campaign and the start of his senior. Finding that rhythm from three will be crucial for Dale to hold off a hungry Class 2A. Along with shooting, he’s unafraid to take charges and make other disruptive plays on defense. Also had a great baseline drive and assist in the Pirate’s match up with Crossings.

After a few quiet days, the junior sharpshooter was locked in to close out the event. He was particular adept from the corners, where he made the defense pay for giving him any space to shoot. Kelly went 3-6 from beyond the arc, and 5-5 at the charity stripe. When hitting from distance, he provides a crucial extra dimension to their deep squad.

Kelly is a great example of knowing who he is as a player and staring in his role. The Dale Pirate doesn’t put the ball on floor unnecessarily. He understands it’s more effective to keep the ball moving with passing while also not wasting dribbles or motion when it’s time to shoot. And shooting from deep is what he does, he always need to be accounted for once he crosses halfcourt. While shooting is his focus, he’s not an one dimensional player. Kelly has an outstanding work rate and feel on the defensive end, as he’s often in the right place at the right time to take charges, deflect a pass or win a 50/50 loose ball.

Injuries thrusted Kelly into a bigger role and he shined. The sharpshooter hit big threes in both contests for Team Griffin ‘s 16U squad. But it was more than just floor spacing and timely shooting. Kelly is also very timely when it comes to positioning on defense. He popped up for steals, deflections, and especially charges. In the first game alone, he drew at least four fouls by being in the right place at the right time. The winning culture that Kelly is apart at Dale continues to shine through.

Kelly drained a pair of first quarter triples that really got the ball rolling in Dale’s blowout victory. Impressively along with his shooting ability, he had unselfish play and good vision as he racked up 5 quick assists as part of the Pirates’ “free flowing, share the ball” offense.
