Live Period is back in action this week, and I finally got to get a front row seat to basketball in person again. I spent most of my day at the Phenom Summer Havoc event in Fort Mill, SC, with plenty of teams and players of interest getting after it. Here are a half dozen of my favorite players from Thursday’s action.
Quamir Ingram
Quamir Ingram
Ingram’s team didn’t complete the comeback in the game I watched, but he was so steady all game long willing his team back in it. He played with great control off drives and getting to two feet, and made the right decision all the time. Lots of kick outs for open jumpers, floaters or push shots for buckets, or just resetting the offense. He doesn’t force the issue when it’s unnecessary, making him highly efficient. Good burst and quickness to beat players off the catch. Knocked down some turnaround jumpers and difficult shots in the midrange. He’s going to be a name to monitor in the NCISAA ranks this upcoming high school season.
I didn’t think Desmond Kent could get THAT much better than when I saw him in May, but boy was I wrong. He was outstanding today for BSA Supreme, guarding all positions with tenacity and strength. He was impressive guarding the 5 man for opposing teams, being at a disadvantage height and weight wise, but still being physical and contesting shots with his long arms. He was also shooting the ball really well from the mid range, and even knocking down a corner three. This has been my biggest hurdle for him skill-wise, and to see that being tackled means the sky is the limit. He has much more room to grow, which is scary, but I’ve enjoyed immensely watching him play today.
Cain wooed many with his performances this weekend, not having huge games but being a leader and top performer on his team. He’s explosive off the bounce, getting to the rim quickly or distributing to teammates. Also has a nice lefty stroke that kept the defense honest from deep. He gets up in your jersey a lot too on defense, showing a lot of fire and competitiveness on that end, essential traits for a college PG. His ability to keep the ball on a string and get paint touches on his own will make him a target for D2s and D3s in the area.
Highlights
Ware was so physical all day today, providing a strong presence for his squad in the paint as they took home multiple wins. He rebounded the ball extremely well, and buried his matchups in the post for his teammates to either score or throw it in to him. He’s got simple post moves that get the job done, but can really explode and dunk the ball or finish above the rim. Although he’s explosive above the rim, he’s a full bodied 235 pounds which makes him more than capable of competing with high level bigs at the D1 level. He should be a priority target for more schools as a fundamental big who does all the physical, dirty work for you in the paint.
White is a true point guard with the tools needed to make his teammates better. He’s got great raw vision, seeing things that many others at his age do not have yet. He threaded the needle for full court passes, made good reads with traffic in front of him, and took care of the ball. He’s got good game IQ to know when to push it and when to hold off and let the game flow a bit. He was directing the show all day so we didn’t get to see him look to score as much, but I really liked how unselfish he was. At 5’11, he’s not ideally sized, but makes up for it in a sturdy frame that keeps him stable against larger defenders. He should be a name for coaches to reach out to if they’re looking to expand their backcourt.
Highlights
Rush was electric in his groups win over Team Trezz Edwards, and really pushed the defense beyond what they could handle. He’s got really quick speed and burst in transition and on drives, which opens up plenty of lanes for teammates to make plays. He’s a good passer with vision above and below the rim, hitting dumpoffs and kickouts consistently. He knocked down a few jumpers as well, making him a threat that can’t just be left open all the time. Lots of growth is still ahead for him, but he ran the show today for his 1 of 1 group.
