Horton is a kid I bought a lot of stock in early and this weekend he showed why that was a good idea. He showed to be building on what he already had. Really good fundamentals and moves very well. Super raw kid but has the tools to be a high-level player. You can tell he is still learning and figuring the game out. He has shown improvement in anticipating and feeling what the defense is giving him. He uses his pivot foot very well to move defenders out of the way and get to the angle he wants to put up shots. I’d like to see him develop more comfort with his left but not many are stopping his right. He is also such a great rebounder. Really attacks the ball at its highest point very well. Very hard to keep off the board. The high motor on him. He seems to have a nice smooth shot on his free throws but doesn’t shoot during the game, so think once he develops a face-up game he will be very tough to stop. My favorite thing from him this weekend as he played his best game in bracket play against the best team I saw him play against all weekend.
Smith has it. His height of being a 6’8 wing, that truly plays and moves like a wing already going into his sophomore year is a special. His hands also scrap the ground as he runs because his wingspans are so long. Very coordinated kid that moves great. His speed and quickness are up to par with most guards his age. His jumper was smooth and he knocked it down multiple times. I do worry that he relies on that maybe a little bit too much tho because he is a walking mismatch for people. Too big to be guarded by a guard and most other wings his age and then too athletic to be guarded by a big on the perimeter. Even tho he likes playing outside on the offensive end more he did bang and get multiple rebounds on the defensive end. Showed he is willing to do whatever it takes to win. Kowalczyk looked flat-out really good this weekend. He got many minutes on the St. John’s final four run this season but as a freshman wasn’t really asked to do much this past weekend in Fort Wayne he was anything but timid. He was very aggressive and hunting for shots. Did settle for threes. Used his pump fake into a dribble pull-up going either way very well. He’s a bigger wing, listed at 6’5, with good length so a hit shot is pretty difficult to contest. He seemed to be learning and getting more comfortable with his size. He showed the ability to use his length to guard smaller and quick guys and then bang with post players. I also really like how he was getting to the rim even though he could have shortened a jump shot every time he touched the ball. He dunked a quick dump-down pass in the game I watched showing that his athleticism is coming. If this kid gets bigger, quick, and faster… watch out.
Dominance. Greer was simply dominant in the game I saw him play. They are not many times Greer steps on the court and isn’t the biggest player and he embraces it. He was making everything close around the rim unless he is fouled. He was scoring the ball in a very efficient fashion. Any board that was in his reach, he was going to get it. No real boxing him out with one player. Strong big kid. Also very coordinated and moves really well. I really liked that he played almost the whole game I watched and didn’t seem tired at the end of it. He isn’t just camping out in the post either, very active in the lane and running the floor consistently.
