On Tuesday night, the regular season slate cranked back up as teams were back on the court following last week’s tournament action. We had quite a few great games across the state and every single Wednesday, we’re breaking down some of the best individual performances in the biggest games and much more! We spotlight some of those performances here. If we missed a top performer, let us know! Email Michael@PrepHoops.com and be sure to send in your top performer picks following the games each week!
On Tuesday night we were supposed to see a top five showdown between Del City and El Reno in a potential 5A state tournament preview. The Eagles flexed their muscles and it turned into a one-sided affair as Del City would beat the visiting Indians 69-53 on Tuesday night. The Eagles did not mess around with El Reno on Tuesday and their star center Brandon Garrison Brandon Garrison 6’8″ | C Evans | 2023 State #33 Nation OK led the way once again. The OSU signee and top overall prospect in the state’s 2023 class would finish with 21 points and 11 rebounds as well as four blocked shots. Garrison has been a double-double machine for the Eagles when he’s on the floor. He proved that last week in the McGuinness Classic and he was back at it again in their big win over El Reno. Del City now has a week off before hosting Millwood on Tuesday.
4A’s #3 Weatherford remained undefeated on the season after beating up on Elk City on Tuesday night with a 77-38 win on the road. Leading the way once again was their sophomore superstar CJ Nickson CJ Nickson 6’6″ | SF Weatherford | 2025 State #309 Nation OK , who finished with a game-high 23 points in the win. Nickson is coming off a tournament performance in the Weatherford tourney where he was absolutely dominant from start to finish. All eyes will be on Nickson and the Eagles later this week when they host 4A’s #10 Bethany. Then the Eagles will play in the Kingfisher tournament next week and it seems like a showdown with 4A powerhouse Kingfisher is inevitable. With how Nickson is playing over the last two weeks, we might have to consider that Weatherford would be the favorite in that tournament.
Bartlesville rolled on Tuesday night and had no problems with visiting Muskogee, winning 73-55. The Bruins bounced back with the win after back to back losses to Carl Albert and Millwood in their tourney last week. Leading the way once again was their junior superstar David Castillo David Castillo 6’1″ | PG Sunrise Christian Academy (KS) | 2024 #80 Nation KS . The Bruins had several players finish in double figures but the Roughers couldn’t do anything to slow down Castillo, who finished with a game-high 31 points in the win. He also scored 35 points in their third place game against Millwood on Saturday that we were in the house for. The thing that makes Castillo so special is how effortless it looks on the offensive end of the floor. You can go a few minutes without looking at the scoreboard and the next time you look he’s scored ten points and made it look easy.
In their first game officially as a ranked Class 5A team, Holland Hall made quite the statement. The Dutch would dominate Cascia Hall 61-33 in a game that was actually called late in the third quarter when a backboard at Cascia would break. The Dutch improved to 11-0 on the season and their senior Jadon Cool Jadon Cool 6’3″ | CG Holland Hall | 2023 State OK was the leader in the scoring department once again. Averaging nearly 20 points per game, Cool would drop 24 points and also grab six steals in the win on Tuesday night. And again, this was a win that actually only featured three quarters of basketball. The Dutch beat Cascia again after beating them in the Skiatook tournament title game on Saturday night. The Dutch will host Rejoice Christian Friday night before participating in the Deer Creek tournament next week.
One of the top small school standouts in the state’s 2024 class is Preston point guard Jervais Goree Jervais Goree 5’8″ | PG Preston | 2024 State OK . He was at it again on Tuesday night as 2A’s #2 Preston took down Henryetta with ease in an 89-62 victory. Gore absolutely filled up the stat sheet. He would finish with 30 points and also dish out nine assists and also contributed with rebounds and steals. Goree and the Pirates bounced back after losing to Oklahoma Christian Academy in the championship game of the Morrison tournament over the weekend. Everyone in Class 2A is looking up at defending champion Dale right now. But Goree and the Pirates definitely have to be taken seriously in the 2A title race. They pushed Dale to overtime when the two teams played back in November.
One of the top stories from last week was unbeaten Holland Hall all of a sudden getting bumped up to Class 5A. In that same story, Ardmore dropped down to Class 4A and coincidentally, the Tigers have been playing good basketball ever since. They’ve won three in a row, including a 65-62 road win over Durant on Tuesday night. The Tigers were led by their senior guard Jordyn Brown Jordyn Brown 6’0″ | PG Ardmore | 2023 State OK , who would finish with 31 points in the win. Brown has the reputation of being one of the top shooters in the state. It sounds like 30+ point performances from him have become common occurrences and Ardmore will definitely need that down the stretch. They improved to 5-7 on the season but the drop down to Class 4A has put them in arguably the deepest class in the state this year.
We like to spread the love and not write about the same players over and over but it’s hard not to once again tip your cap to Nathan Hale’s superstar junior guard Kabron Lewis Kabron Lewis 6’2″ | CG Hale | 2024 State OK . After dominating the Locust Grove tournament last week, scoring 41 in the championship game, Lewis was at it again Tuesday night. The Rangers improved to 11-1 on the season with an 80-57 win over Will Rogers at home. Lewis would go off for 32 points in the win and was 5-8 from beyond the arc as the Rangers won their 11th consecutive game after losing to Memorial in overtime back in November. The Rangers will host Edison in a 5A top ten clash on Friday night and that will certainly be a challenge. But at the rate we’re going, we might as well pencil in Lewis as a Top Performer at least once a week.
Highlights
One of the main showdowns in the state and specifically in Class 6A on Tuesday night took place at Putnam City West as the Patriots hosted their rivals from Putnam City North. The Patriots sent the Panthers home with their first loss of the season with a 64-60 win. The Patriots had a complete attack in terms of scoring but there’s no doubt that the most impactful player was their sophomore Kaidon Rayfield Kaidon Rayfield 6’8″ | PF Putnam City West | 2025 State #122 Nation OK , who is turning into a superstar this season. Rayfield finished with 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds and also had ten blocked shots. He’s already considered a top five prospect in the state’s 2025 class and maybe it’s time we start having a real conversation if he’s the top overall guy in the class. The upside is ridiculous and he continues to show that every night out.
5A’s top-ranked Carl Albert won their fourth game in a row with a big win on the road against Lawton, beating the Wolverines 62-59. The Titans were in trouble but would rally to win and once again, leading the way was junior guard Quincy Hopkins Quincy Hopkins 6’3″ | SF Carl Albert | 2024 State OK . Fresh off his outstanding performance in the tourney championship game up in Bartlesville, Hopkins led the way for the Titans once again. He finished with 16 points, leading the Titans in scoring. We mentioned it over the weekend but it deserves repeating here. Hopkins is a very intriguing prospect who’s upside appears to be incredibly high when you consider the athleticism and control that he plays with currently. As all of the other things continue to improve in his game, we could see Hopkins become a top ten guy in the class.
